Breakdown

Drive Y Corner is a bunch spread passing concept out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty that stacks two drive routes underneath a corner route out of the bunch alignment. The backside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers to stretch the defense, while the bunch releases with two crossing drive routes at the second level and the outside bunch receiver breaks into a corner route toward the sideline. This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams and flat with layered horizontal and vertical stress, and the primary read progresses from the corner route as the initial shot, down to the drive routes working underneath if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Two safeties aligned deep and even pre-snap indicates Cover 4, which is exactly what this play is designed to punish through the vertical seam and corner combo. If you see a single high safety rotating late, that usually means Cover 3 or man match, and the drive routes underneath become your outlet against the shortened middle of the field. Watch the flat defender responsible for the bunch side, if he sinks too deep chasing the corner route, the drive routes will settle into open grass behind him. A hard blitz look with the mike stepping up pre-snap should push your eyes immediately to the shallow drive route as your check down since the protection may not hold up against extra rushers. Man coverage with a corner shaded outside on the bunch receiver tips you off that the corner route will have to win on speed, so be ready to come off it quickly if he does not create separation by the top of his stem.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check for two high safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 4 and tells you the corner route has room to sit in the honey hole against a quarters shell.

Use motion or a hot route to speed up the outside drive route into a quicker crossing route if you are facing man coverage and need an immediate separation window.

This play hits hardest on second and long or third and medium since the drive routes create natural rub action against man defenders trying to stay attached in the bunch.

Pair this call with Mtn HB Corner or Corner Divide earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the corner route, then come back to Drive Y Corner to hit the crossing drive routes when they jump the corner.

If the corner cornerback presses hard at the snap, immediately look to the drive route working across the middle since the traffic from the bunch release will create natural picks against man coverage.
