Drive Y Corner is a bunch spread pass concept built to attack Cover 4 and other zone shells with a high-low corner route on the boundary. Off the bunch alignment, the outside receiver runs a corner route to the flag while the two remaining bunch receivers run a Drive combo underneath, one settling on a shallow drag and the other pushing across the field on a deeper crossing drag, and the backside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers. The read progression starts with the Y corner route as the primary shot against soft corners or blown coverage, then works down to the shallow drag as the checkdown against tight man coverage or pressure.

Defensive Reads

Cover 4 with soft corners is the primary shell this play beats since the corner route sits in the void between the flat defender and the deep quarter defender. Watch the flat or curl defender at the snap, if he sinks under the drag routes instead of staying wide, the corner throw is live all the way. Man coverage defenders trying to run with the crossing drags can get picked off by traffic in the bunch, so look for a natural rub to spring the underneath receiver open. Cover 2 with an aggressive jamming corner and a true deep half safety shading toward the corner route can take this away, so be ready to check down to the drag or the backside vertical. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through a nano blitz up the middle will collapse the pocket before the corner route develops, so identify pressure pre-snap and be prepared to get the ball out early on the shallow drag.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a defined high low read against zone coverage. Identify Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells pre-snap by watching safety depth, if both safeties sit at 10 to 12 yards with corners playing off, the corner route has room to work in the honey hole. Hot route the backside vertical into a deep dig if you see the defense rolling into a two high shell to take away the corner. Pair this play with Mtn HB Corner or Mtn HB Seam Y-Whip in the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick game and vertical shots off similar bunch looks. If the corner window is late developing, work the drag combo underneath since the two crossing routes create natural rubs against man coverage defenders trying to stay in phase.
