This is primarily a man beater thanks to the rub action created by the bunch alignment, though the deep over also stresses single high safeties and Tampa 2 shells by working across the middle of the field. Primary progression starts with the deep over crossing route, works to the corner route on the sideline as the secondary read, and checks down to the RB swing route as the outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts a defender across with the bunch motion, which signals man coverage and tells you to expect a defender chasing the crosser. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the bunch side is vulnerable to the deep over crossing away from that help. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the middle hook zone, since that defender can undercut the deep over if he reads quarterback eyes early. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with man beaters on the outside get exposed by the corner route working to open grass along the sideline. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field, since both the over and corner routes run into help over the top.
