Breakdown

Mesh Slot Out lines up out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty with a tight bunch to the left and two receivers stacked to the right. The two bunch receivers run a classic mesh concept, crossing shallow underneath at the same depth to rub off man defenders, while the HB releases out of the backfield on a shallow drag under the mesh as a check-down option. To the right, the inside receiver runs a quick out to the flat and the outside receiver stems vertical before breaking to a deep corner route, stretching the defense horizontally and vertically. This is a man beater built around natural picks from the mesh crossers, with the deep corner serving as the home run shot if the defense jumps the underneath routes.

Defensive Reads

Read the mesh crossers first since they are the primary progression against man coverage, look for defenders getting hung up on the natural pick point. Key the flat defender on the out route to the right, if he sits low and squats on the route the corner route behind him is likely open. Watch for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the shallow zone, a classic sign of Cover 3 or Cover 4 match that can jump the mesh crossers and bait a turnover. Against Cover 2, identify whether the corner is playing off or bailing deep, since the deep corner route needs the sideline cushion to complete against a hard flat defender. If the defense shows blitz with man coverage behind it, the mesh concept usually wins fastest since crossing routes create natural traffic against blitzing linebackers.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and medium when you expect man coverage, since the mesh crossers thrive off natural rubs against man defenders.

Pre-snap, check for single high safety looks or press man alignment on the bunch side, both are strong indicators the mesh concept will get open.

If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4), prioritize the deep corner route on the right since zone defenders often widen and leave the corner window open against Cover 3 rotations.

Hot route the HB to a quick check release if you diagnose a blitz, giving your quarterback an immediate outlet against pressure looks.

Pair this play with Mtn Mesh Drive or Mtn Slot Cross from the same set to keep opponents guessing between mesh depth and crossing angles, forcing user defenders to misjudge which shallow route to jump.
