Mesh Traffic aligns out of the Bunch Spread Nasty look with three receivers stacked tight to the formation and a lone receiver to the boundary. The bunch runs a classic mesh combo underneath: two receivers cross low across the field while a third climbs the seam behind the traffic, and the outside receiver runs a deep dig back across the middle to sit behind the mesh. The running back releases to the flat for a checkdown or outlet against blitz. This is a man beater built to create natural rub picks through the mesh point, with the primary read starting on the crossing routes underneath before working up to the deep dig if the mesh clears space.
Identify man coverage pre-snap by checking if defenders are aligned tight on the bunch receivers, this play thrives against man since the mesh point forces natural rubs and separation. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow zone drop under the mesh can clog the crossing routes and force you to hold the ball longer. Key the single high safety, if he rotates down to help on the dig route it opens up the underneath mesh crossers for an easier completion. Beware of a nano blitz or interior pressure since the mesh routes take time to develop, if the defense sends extra rushers get the ball out to the running back in the flat immediately. Zone coverage with a robber sitting in the shallow middle of the field is the biggest threat to this concept, that defender can jump the mesh crossers and bait a turnover.
Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like a single high safety or defenders mirroring the bunch since the mesh crossers create natural picks against man defenders.
Hot route the running back to a quick flat release if you see a blitz look, giving yourself an immediate outlet against pressure.
Use this play on second and medium to third and short since the mesh combo needs a beat to develop and works best when the defense has to respect multiple route levels.
Watch for a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone drop under the mesh, if you see this bail out to the deep dig route which sits behind that underneath traffic.
Pair this with Mtn Mesh Drive or Mtn Mesh Swing from the same set to keep the defense guessing between mesh combos with different outlet routes.
