Speed Dig out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty sends the bunch trio into a layered route combo: the outermost receiver runs a deep out that breaks hard toward the sideline, the middle bunch receiver runs a dig that settles across the middle at intermediate depth, and the third receiver climbs vertically up the seam before bending outside toward the corner. The back releases into a check release route up the middle of the field, giving the quarterback a safety valve underneath while the dig develops. This is a man beater built to attack the middle of the field, with the primary read progression going deep out first, then working down to the dig as the main target, and finally checking down to the HB route if both are covered.
Identify the middle linebacker depth pre-snap because a shallow drop or blitz look opens up the dig route immediately after the break. Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone, they can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with deep zone drops can take away the corner breaking route on the outside, forcing the quarterback to work the dig or checkdown. Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is where this play wins most consistently since the dig picks on man leverage. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are vulnerable if the back releases clean into his route before the rush arrives.
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the dig sits down in the void between the hashes and exploits man coverage leverage. Use motion out of the bunch to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man it confirms man coverage and green lights the dig read. Hot route the check release back into a flat route on third and long to add a quick underlying option against soft zone drops. Pair this play with Speed Dig Out and Z Swirl In from the same set to keep defenders guessing on which route breaks in versus out off similar bunch releases. Call this on second and medium to third and long situations where the dig has room to sit down in a soft spot before the sticks.
