Corner Divide is a bunch-based dropback pass concept out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty that stresses the deep half of the field with divide routes. The two inside bunch receivers split the field with a deep corner route and a deep post-like vertical that clears out the middle, while the outside receiver runs an out breaking route to the flat and the backside X runs a deep vertical up the numbers. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route from the backfield, giving a checkdown or big-play option to the flat if the corner route occupies the safety. Primary read progression starts with the corner route to the deep outside, works to the deep vertical crosser (the divide) if the safety leans toward the corner, and comes down to the HB wheel or the flat out route as the underneath answer against zone drops or blitz.

Defensive Reads

Read the strong safety pre-snap: if he is walked down near the bunch, he is likely keying the corner route or crashing on the wheel, which opens the divide route behind him. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since a user linebacker sitting shallow in the middle is trying to lurk the divide crosser and take away your first two reads. Against Cover 3, the corner route should win outside because the deep third defender has to respect the vertical from the backside X, so throw with anticipation before the flat defender can recover. Cover 2 shells are the toughest matchup here because both safeties can help divide the field evenly, so expect to check down to the HB wheel or the underneath out quickly. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring extra rushers off the edge will expose the HB in his wheel release, so identify pressure early and get the ball out on time to the shortest route in the progression.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a defined shot play with a built in safety valve. Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high shells: if you see one deep safety, expect the corner route to win outside against Cover 3 because the flat defender has to widen for the HB wheel. Against two high shells, prioritize the divide crosser since it is designed to split the two safeties before they can rotate over the top. Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig if you are facing heavy Cover 4 quarters looks, since the divide concept can get clogged against four deep defenders. Pair this call with Seam Divide or Mtn HB Corner earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on the corner route, then come back to Corner Divide to hit the wheel or backside shot once linebackers start jumping underneath routes. Use max protect or check the HB into a stay home block if you are seeing a lot of overload pressure, since the wheel route removes him as a blocker.
