Breakdown

Pounder is a run blitz package out of the Dime 2-3-6 Big Dime 4-1-6 personnel, designed to load the box with extra defensive backs while still selling numbers against the run. The blocking assignment shell asks the front to crash downhill and fill gaps immediately, with the single linebacker keying the mesh point and the defensive backs rallying to contain outside runs and cutback lanes. Since this is a defensive play call rather than an offensive route concept, the primary read progression for the defender controlling the play is diagnosing run versus pass at the snap: if it is a run, attack the nearest gap; if it is a pass, transition quickly into underneath zone or man leverage depending on your pre-snap call.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back alignment pre-snap, if he is offset strong or weak it tells you which gap the run is likely to attack. Key the offensive line splits, tight splits usually mean inside zone or power runs which Pounder is built to stop. Post-snap, read the fullback or lead blocker path since Pounder relies on your box defenders beating blocks quickly before the runner reaches the second level. This call struggles against outside zone stretch plays and jet sweep motion since the extra DBs may be a step slow flowing to the edge. Be alert for play-action off run action, since Pounder sacrifices some deep coverage integrity to load the box and can be hit over the top on shot plays.

Usage Tips

Call Pounder on short yardage and third and one or fourth and one situations where the offense is likely to run between the tackles.

Use your pre-snap alignment to show base Dime looks and disguise the extra box presence, then confirm run action before committing your user defender downhill.

Combine Pounder with Cover 3 Buzz Mable or Cover 1 Hole in the same set so opponents cannot key blitz tendencies purely off formation.

If the offense audibles into a spread run or option look, be ready to bail into a zone drop with your linebacker since Pounder can be exposed on quick RPOs.

Sequence Pounder after showing Nickel 2 Trap or FS Will Blitz 0 earlier in the drive so the opponent respects run blitz packages and hesitates on play calling.
