Overview

Cowboys Defense and its sibling cut NFL Live Cowboys Defense are functionally the same book. They share all 374 plays and differ by zero sets, so there is no strategic reason to chase one over the other: pick whichever appears in your menu and build the same audible package. The only thing worth knowing is that neither version gives you a hidden formation the other lacks, so any scouting you do against one applies exactly to the other.

What you actually get is a 374 play defensive book spread across 9 formations and 25 sets, larger than 67% of the game's 64 defensive team playbooks, and it is unapologetically a sub package book. Nickel accounts for 181 plays (48%) across 10 sets, which is the deepest single-formation well here by a wide margin, and Dime adds another 57 plays (15%) across 2 sets. Stack 3-3-5 (21 plays), 2-5 (15 plays) and Dollar (12 plays) on top and roughly three quarters of this playbook is five or more defensive backs. The 3-4 is the heavy counterweight at 63 plays (17%) across 5 sets, while 4-3 is a token 6 plays in a single set and Goal Line Defense is 13 plays across 3 sets.

Concept coverage tells you how it wants to be played: Cover 1, Cover 1 Robber Press, Cover 1 Hole and Man Coverage for user-heavy pressure looks, Cover 3, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 and Quarters for the zone side, plus Double Wr1 and Double Wr2 for bracketing a single problem receiver. The blitz family runs Blitz, Corner Blitz and LB Blitz, with plays like 3 Deep Blitz, Corner Blitz 2 and 0 LB Cross Games giving you both safe and all-out pressure from sub personnel. The 2-5 is a genuine rarity, appearing in only 12 of the game's 236 playbooks, and it is your answer to empty and spread looks. This is a game plan for a player who wants to live in Nickel, disguise Cover 1 and Cover 3 Match out of the same shell, and let personnel groups like Big Nickel 5-1-5, Nickel 2-4-5, Dime 3-2-6 and Big Quarter 3-1-7 do the heavy lifting instead of swapping base fronts.

Scheme Fit

Cowboys Defense wants a defensive back room with depth and speed, because with Nickel at 48% and Dime plus Dollar on top of it you will have five or six corners and safeties on the field nearly every snap, and your third and fourth corners are starters in this book. Man coverage corners with press and press coverage ratings matter most for the Cover 1, Cover 1 Robber Press and Double Wr1 shells, while you need at least one rangy free safety to play the middle of Cover 3 Match and Quarters, and edge rushers with block shedding to make Corner Blitz and LB Blitz land without extra bodies. Pick it if you like usering a defender in sub personnel, disguising man and zone out of the same Nickel picture, and using the 3-4 as a situational run front rather than a base identity.

Strengths

  • Nickel at 181 plays across 10 sets is deep enough to run an entire game from one formation family, which means your pre-snap shells, line shifts and coverage audibles all come from the same starting picture and an opponent cannot read your call from the formation alone.
  • Ten Nickel sets plus Dime's 2 sets and Dollar's single set give you a sub-heavy audible package where Cover 1 Robber Press, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 3 Match and Corner Blitz 2 can all be reached without leaving five or six defensive back personnel, so you never eat a mismatch waiting on a substitution.
  • The 2-5 (15 plays) shows up in only 12 of the game's 236 playbooks, so most opponents have no film on how its front aligns or how its pressure paths develop, and 60 Half Out out of that set is a legitimate curveball against empty and trips.
  • The 3-4 at 63 plays across 5 sets gives this book a real odd-front package rather than a token one, so you can shift the line and pinch for run downs and still call from Base 3-4 or Base 5-2 personnel instead of being trapped in sub.
  • Double Wr1 and Double Wr2 concepts let you bracket a single elite receiver while you user a different defender, and because they live inside the same Nickel shells you can hot route the bracket on without tipping it before the snap.

Weaknesses

  • 4-3 is 6 plays in a single set, so there is effectively no base even front here. A committed heavy run game out of two back and jumbo sets will force you to defend it from Nickel and 3-4 looks and win with line shifts and user fits rather than with personnel.
  • Roughly three quarters of the playbook is five or more defensive backs, which makes your tendencies obvious. An opponent who knows you are in Nickel or Dime on almost every snap can stay in condensed formations and run into the light box without guessing.
  • Goal Line Defense is only 13 plays across 3 sets and Prevent is 6 plays in one set, so your short-yardage and end-of-half menus are thin. You will be recycling the same two or three calls on fourth and goal, which a repeat-playing opponent will solve quickly.
  • 3-3-5 (21 plays), 2-5 (15 plays) and Dollar (12 plays) are each one set deep, so the rare-formation advantage is shallow. Once someone beats the handful of calls in those sets there is no second layer of pressure or coverage to rotate to inside them.
  • The concept list is coverage-forward with only Blitz, Corner Blitz and LB Blitz as pressure families, so exotic front-based nanos are limited and you are leaning on Cover 1 and Cover 3 Match variations plus user pressure to generate stress.

Usage Tips

Build your primary audible package entirely out of Nickel sets: carry one Cover 1 (Cover 1 Robber Press or Cover 1 Hole), one Cover 3 Match or Quarters call, one Corner Blitz and one LB Blitz. With 181 plays across 10 sets you can cover every down from this family and rotate looks without changing personnel.

On first and second down against balanced personnel, live in the 3-4 (63 plays across 5 sets). Use it as your run-down front, shift the line to the strength and let the Nickel package carry third down instead of trying to blitz out of base.

Save 2-5 (15 plays) and 3-3-5 (21 plays) for third and long and obvious empty looks. These are your least scouted formations, so use calls like 60 Half Out and 3 Deep Blitz as changeups rather than staples, and do not show them twice in a row.

Go to Dime (57 plays across 2 sets) and Dollar (12 plays) on third and 10 plus and in two minute situations, and use Cov 1 QB Contain Spy against mobile quarterbacks so your rush lane discipline holds while you user a deep defender.

Use Double Wr1 and Double Wr2 out of Nickel when a single receiver is carrying the offense, then user the opposite side yourself. Pair it with press adjustments and a hook drop hot route to shrink the throwing window the bracket leaves open.
