Cover 1 Hole out of the Even 6-1 4-3 set is a man free defense with a robber underneath. The diagram shows the deep safety rotating over the top in man territory while the "hole" defender (the MLB) sits in the middle at a shallow depth to rob crossing routes and check-downs, with four defenders shown dropping vertically underneath to squeeze the middle of the field. This is a man coverage call built to lock up receivers on the outside while taking away drag routes, slants and shallow crosses over the middle, making it a strong man beater killer against spot-drop route combos.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify one deep safety and tight man alignment from your corners, that confirms the Cover 1 Hole shell. Watch the hole defender depth at the snap, if he sits too shallow he opens up seam throws behind him. This coverage shuts down shallow crossers, drags and hitches because the underneath robber sits in the throwing lane. It is vulnerable to deep out routes and corner routes toward the sideline since the corners have no safety help on that boundary. Post-snap, key any receiver breaking into the middle third, that is exactly where the hole defender should be sinking to jump the route before the quarterback can deliver it.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the middle of the field with drags, slants or crossing routes. Check the pre-snap alignment for a single high safety and press corners, that tips man coverage and confirms Cover 1 Hole is a good call. Use the hole defender to bait quarterbacks into throwing underneath crossers, then break on the ball with your user controlled defender. Mix this play into your call sheet alongside Cover 1 Mlb Blitz and Sam Blitz 3 from the same Even 6-1 set so opponents cannot key on the single high shell before the snap. Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stack or bunch formations since your corners will be isolated in man with no deep help outside the hole defender.
