Overview
Base 4-3 is the defensive personnel counterpart built on four down linemen, three linebackers, two cornerbacks, and two safeties, giving you the standard front seven with no sub package substitutions. This grouping is designed to match up against offensive 21 and 12 personnel, where the extra linebacker gives you a real box defender against lead runs and play action while still keeping two safeties over the top. Because you are not subbing in a third or fourth corner, offenses that trot out 11 personnel or empty sets immediately force you into a decision: leave a linebacker matched on a slot receiver or burn a timeout worth of pre snap adjustments shifting to man coverage with safety help.
Strengths
- Three true linebackers on the field means gap integrity against inside zone, power, and lead concepts without needing to commit a safety to the box, so you can play two high shells and still stop the run.<br>Even 6 1 out of 4 3 gives you a compact front where all four linemen are aligned in gaps, which shortens the path to the quarterback on A gap and B gap blitz concepts and creates natural nano style pressure looks when you crash the ends inside.<br>The extra linebacker is your best asset against play action rollouts and RPOs, since you can user control the middle linebacker, sit in the throwing window, and still have two flat defenders assigned in zone.<br>Base personnel usually keeps your highest awareness and best block shed linemen on the field instead of undersized nickel rushers, which improves pursuit tackling and reduces broken tackles on checkdowns and screens.<br>You can disguise coverage effectively because linebackers can be hot routed into blitz, man, or hook zones pre snap, letting the same alignment show Cover 3 and rotate to Cover 1 robber after the snap.
Weaknesses
- Your third linebacker is a liability the second an offense goes 11 personnel or spreads to trips, because a linebacker matched on a slot receiver loses badly on option routes, whip routes, and any vertical stem.<br>Speed mismatches show up immediately on wheel routes and seam concepts out of the slot, so man beaters that isolate your linebacker in space are the fastest way for opponents to attack this grouping.<br>Base personnel struggles against four verticals and any concept that floods one side of the field, since you do not have enough true coverage defenders to bracket outside and inside at the same time.<br>Sharp opponents will read your personnel pre snap and simply audible to spread concepts, forcing you to either take the mismatch or spend your pre snap adjustments manually shifting linebackers into the slot, which telegraphs your coverage.<br>Even 6 1 alignments in particular leave the second level thin on outside runs and stretch concepts, because the compact front is easy to reach block and seal when your single deep linebacker overpursues.
