Over Ed is a defensive set inside the 3-4 formation, and that changes how you approach every one of the writeups below: instead of route combos you are working with coverage shells, blitz paths, and pre-snap disguises. The alignment shifts the front to the strong side (the "Over" shade) while dropping one edge player into a stand-up rush position, giving you a hybrid look that presents like a four man front but keeps 3-4 personnel on the field. Compared to base 3-4 sets that align the outside linebackers symmetrically, Over Ed tilts the defensive line toward the tight end side and creates a natural free rusher lane on the weak side, which is why the pass rush plays faster off the snap without adding extra rushers.
The play list is unusually deep in coverage variety, which is the real selling point. You get the full single high family (Cover 1 Robber Press, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 1 QB Contain), three deep zone with sideline and cloud variations (Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Cloud), split field looks (Cover 6, Cover 9, Cover 4 Quarters), and two man under (Cover 2 Man, Cover 2). Because every one of those plays starts from the identical shell, the offense cannot key your coverage off alignment. That is the entire point of running everything out of one set: the quarterback sees the same picture on Cover 1 Robber Press that he sees on Cover 4 Quarters.
The blitz package is where Over Ed separates from softer 3-4 sets. 1 Pirate Spy, 1 Sting Tex, 2 Sim Tex, 3 Sim Tex, Hot Blitz 3, Olb Fire Man, Sam Crash 3, and Strong Snake 3 give you simulated pressures (rush four, drop one) alongside true overload blitzes. The Tex and Sim concepts are the money plays: they send interior loopers while dropping an edge defender, which breaks slide protection and forces the running back to pick up an unblocked A gap defender. Against man beater route combos you can pair Olb Fire Man with a user controlled safety and still get pressure home without sacrificing the deep middle.
Stack Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 4 Quarters back to back from the same shell so the offense cannot tell whether the deep middle is occupied, then punish any high throw with a user controlled safety
Save 2 Sim Tex and 3 Sim Tex for third down and long, the drop plus loop concept generates unblocked rushers exactly when the offense expects a four man rush
Manually shade your coverage underneath on Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud when the offense goes empty, and hot route your spy or hole player to help against drag and dig combos
User the middle linebacker on 1 Pirate Spy and 1 Sting Tex so you cover the crosser lane yourself while the pressure works, this is the cleanest way to defend West Coast quick game
Check out of Over Ed into a nickel or dime look when the offense subs into four or five wide, the 3-4 outside linebackers cannot survive extended man coverage against slot speed
Use Cover 6 and Cover 9 on the plus side of the field when you have a single receiver isolated, roll your coverage strength to the trips side and dare the offense to throw the isolation route
