Cover 4 Quarters from the Over Ed 3-4 set is a zone coverage look built to defend the deep quarters of the field while keeping run support intact. The diagram shows four deep defenders (two corners and two safeties) carrying vertical routes into deep quarter zones, two underneath defenders sitting at the sticks in curl/flat drops, and a middle linebacker settling into a shallow hook zone with four-man press up front. This is a zone beater against vertical stems and combo routes since it splits the field into four deep zones and two underneath zones, with the read progression starting at the deep quarters (watch for two-high safeties rotating down) before working down to the hook/curl defenders and finally the shallow middle hook if everything is capped.
Read the two deep safeties pre-snap: if they are aligned at depth and outside the hashes, this confirms a true quarters shell built to bracket four verticals. Post-snap, key the corners for their pattern-match trigger since they should carry any vertical release before sinking to help on deep outs or comebacks. Watch the underneath hook/curl defenders for their drop depth, they are the soft spot against quick slants and stick concepts run to the flat. This coverage struggles against user-controlled receivers who sit down in the seams between the deep quarter and underneath hook zones, so anticipate offenses attacking that window with seam or bench routes. It shuts down four verticals, go routes, and deep post/corner combos, but can be exploited by RPOs and quick game if the underneath defenders are slow to trigger downhill.
Use this on early downs or obvious pass situations where you expect four verticals or deep shot concepts since the four deep defenders can pattern-match any vertical stem.
Pre-snap, check the safety depth and corner leverage to confirm you are getting a true quarters shell rather than a disguised Cover 2 or Cover 3 rotation.
Hot route the underneath curl/flat defenders into shorter drops if you anticipate quick game or RPO looks, since the base drops can be a step slow against three-step passing.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 2 in your play-calling sequence to disguise your shell post-snap and keep the offense guessing between three-deep and four-deep zone drops.
Mix in Sam Crash 3 or Strong Snake 3 on early downs to sell run support, then come back to Cover 4 Quarters on passing downs to keep the same pre-snap picture with a different coverage answer.
