Cover 3 Cloud is a zone coverage shell out of the 3-4 Over Ed front, showing four defensive linemen crashing off the snap with red arrows indicating an early four man rush look. Behind the rush, the coverage rolls into a three deep, four under zone shell with the CX (cloud corner) sinking outside to take away the flat and force the ball inside, while the underneath defenders spread horizontally to wall off short and intermediate crossers. This is a zone defense designed to squeeze the sideline and funnel routes into the middle where the linebackers and hook defenders can close, and the primary read for the defense is to identify the flat threat first, then work inside out to the deep middle third.
Watch for the offense stacking or bunching receivers to the cloud side pre-snap, which is a signal they intend to attack the flat defender with quick outs or bubble screens. Post-snap key the running back release, if he leaks to the flat immediately jump the route with the cloud corner since that is the coverage's main assignment. This coverage is vulnerable to deep out routes and corner routes run behind the cloud corner's landmark, so if you see a receiver stemming vertically before breaking outside, get depth immediately with your deep third defender. Four man rush lanes shown by the red arrows mean no extra blitzers are disguised, so if the offense sees a standard four man rush they may hold protection and take more time in the pocket, making this vulnerable to double moves against man press corners on the backside. Zone beaters like flood concepts or spacing routes into the boundary can stress the shortened flat defender, so be ready to sink linebackers with depth if trips formations attack that side.
Call this on early downs when you expect the offense to attack the flat or run quick game routes, since the cloud corner is built to squat on flat routes and discourage checkdowns to that side. Use pre-snap motion to identify if the offense is running a stick or flat concept and be ready to sink your cloud corner immediately at the snap rather than jumping outside too aggressively. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on which side the cloud rotation is coming from, keeping run fits disguised. Mix in Sam Crash 3 or Strong Snake 3 from the same formation to disguise pressure looks while staying in a three deep shell, forcing the offense to guess between coverage and blitz. Man the flat defender in user control if you have lurk skills so you can jump underneath routes and bait shorter throws for turnovers.
