Overview
NFL Live Patriots Defense is effectively the same book as Patriots Defense. The two cuts share all 331 plays and differ by zero sets, so every formation, set and coverage call you learn in one carries over to the other without adjustment. Pick whichever label shows up in your menus and treat your film study and audible packages as interchangeable.
The playbook is built around sub packages. Nickel carries 138 plays across 9 sets (42% of the book), and Dime adds another 63 plays across 3 sets (19%), so more than 60% of your calls come with five or more defensive backs on the field. Nickel offers three distinct personnel looks (Nickel 2-4-5, Nickel 4-2-5 and Big Nickel 4-2-5), which lets you keep the same formation family while toggling between a linebacker heavy box, a four man front and a safety heavy structure. Dime splits into Dime 4-1-6 and Big Dime 4-1-6 for obvious passing downs. Behind that, 3-4 (63 plays, 5 sets) and 4-3 (42 plays, 3 sets) supply the base fronts, while Goal Line (13 plays), 5-2 (6 plays) and Prevent (6 plays) cover the situational edges.
The coverage menu leans on disguise and matching: Cover 1 and Cover 1 Hole for man pressure, Cover 3 and Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 and Quarters, Cover 6, Cover 2, plus Blitz and LB Blitz tags. At 331 plays it sits below the middle of the 64 defensive team playbooks in size, so it rewards a player who wants to run a tight, spread friendly game plan out of Nickel and Dime rather than one who wants endless front variety. The inclusion of 5-2, a formation found in only 15 of the game's 236 playbooks, gives it a short yardage wrinkle most opponents will not have scouted.
Scheme Fit
NFL Live Patriots Defense wants a secondary deep with cover capable safeties and at least one slot corner who can win in man, since most of your snaps come from Nickel and Dime with Cover 1, Cover 3 Match and Quarters calls. Up front, prioritize versatile linebackers who can cover and blitz and edge defenders who can hold up in both 4-2-5 and 3-4 alignments, plus a stout nose for the rare 5-2 short yardage snaps. It fits a player who faces spread heavy opponents, prefers disguising coverage over heavy front variety and is comfortable user controlling a hole or robber defender.

Strengths
- Nickel depth is the headline: 138 plays across 9 sets and three personnel groupings (Nickel 2-4-5, Nickel 4-2-5, Big Nickel 4-2-5) let you answer 11 and 12 personnel without leaving the formation, so your audible package can stay in one family while you swap box counts and coverage shells.
- Big Nickel 4-2-5 gives you a third safety against tight end heavy sets, so you can match a flexed tight end with a safety in Cover 1 or Cover 3 Match instead of subbing into a base front and losing speed on the field.
- A full passing down package with 63 Dime plays across Dime 4-1-6 and Big Dime 4-1-6 means you can sit in six defensive back looks on 3rd and long and still rotate between Cover 1 Hole, Quarters and Cover 6 to break up the reads of spread offenses.

- Coverage variety built around match rules (Cover 3 Match, Quarters, Cover 6) pairs well with the sub package emphasis, letting you show a two high shell pre snap and rotate late to punish hot routes and pre snap reads.
Weaknesses
- Heavy sub package weighting (61% Nickel and Dime) means opponents who live in 21, 22 or jumbo personnel can force you into the thinner base sets, where 4-3 only has 42 plays across 3 sets.
- The 5-2 front is a single set with just 6 plays, so a smart opponent who sees it once on short yardage can quickly learn every call it offers and attack the same gaps or edges on the next snap.
- Goal Line is limited to 13 plays across 3 sets, leaving few ways to disguise pressure inside the 5, and an offense can cycle play action and bootlegs until it finds the one look you have not covered.
- At 331 plays the book is smaller than 62% of the defensive team playbooks, so over a long franchise season or a best of three a sharp opponent will see your full tendency map faster than with a deeper book.
- Prevent carries only 6 plays in one Big Quarter 3-1-7 set, so end of half and Hail Mary situations offer very little disguise, and opponents can target the same deep seams repeatedly.
Usage Tips
Build your primary audible package around Nickel, anchoring 1st and 10 with a Nickel 4-2-5 Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 look and keeping a Nickel 2-4-5 call ready when the offense shows a run heavy tendency on early downs.
Switch to Big Nickel 4-2-5 whenever the offense brings a tight end on the field with three receivers, using Cover 1 or Cover 1 Hole to put a safety on the tight end and user the hole defender over the middle.
On 3rd and 6 or longer, live in Dime 4-1-6 and Big Dime 4-1-6, alternating Quarters and Cover 6 with LB Blitz calls so the offense cannot hot route to a single beater every snap.
Save the Base 5-2 front for 3rd and 1, 4th and short or two point attempts and do not show it early, since its single set of 6 plays will be scouted fast once seen.
Use the 3-4 sets (63 plays, 5 sets) as your change up base front on 2nd and short against 21 and 22 personnel, where the extra linebacker helps set the edge and the Blitz tags let you bring pressure from different angles.
