Overview

3-4 Under is the defensive answer inside the 3-4 family, and it plays nothing like the standard Over or Odd alignments. The front shifts the nose tackle to the strong side A gap with the reduced right end (RRE) sliding down over the tackle, which creates a true 5-2 style base look with two inside linebackers stacked behind the shifted line. That reduction means your interior gaps are already plugged pre-snap, so you are not relying on line shift audibles to stop inside zone and duo runs. The weak side of the formation is where the pressure equity lives: with the front tilted strong, the weak outside linebacker has a clean edge, which is exactly why Saw Blitz 1, Weak Blitz 3, and Weak Blitz 1 all hit so fast from this set.

The coverage library is where 3-4 Under separates itself from blitz-only sets. You get the full spectrum: Cover 3 Match and Cover 3 Sky for base zone, Cover 4 Quarters and Cover 6 for split-field, Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Invert for two-high, and Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 2 Man for man principles. Because every shell comes out of the same reduced front, you can run four completely different coverages behind an identical pre-snap picture. That is the core value in competitive play: the offense sees the same 5-2 alignment and cannot count safeties or read leverage to know whether they are getting Tampa 2, FS Slant 3, or Pinch Buck 0.

Against personnel, the Base 5-2 grouping keeps four defensive backs plus two inside linebackers on the field, so you are heavy enough to hold up against 21 and 22 personnel run games while still having Cover 1 Hole WK and Cover 1 QB Contain Spy available to handle scrambling quarterbacks and check releases. The tradeoff is coverage speed on the outside, which means you are asking linebackers to carry seams and matching tight ends rather than subbing in a nickel or dime body.

Strengths

  • Reduced front with the nose shifted strong plugs both A gaps pre-snap, which shuts down inside zone, duo, and QB sneak concepts without needing a line shift audible.
  • Weak side pressure package (Saw Blitz 1, Weak Blitz 1, Weak Blitz 3) attacks the open edge created by the strong shift, giving you a fast free rusher against slow-developing play action rollouts.
  • Coverage disguise is elite: Tampa 2, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 6, and Cover 1 Robber Press all deploy from the same 5-2 picture, so opponents cannot read shell from alignment.
  • Cover 1 QB Contain Spy and Cover 1 Hole WK give you built-in QB containment and a middle hole player, which kills scramble drills and drag or hook combos over the ball.
  • Cover 2 Invert and Cover 2 Invert Hard Flat rotate safety and corner responsibilities, making flat and out route timing throws a trap for offenses that pre-read corner depth.

Weaknesses

  • Base 5-2 personnel means two inside linebackers are matched on tight ends and slots, so 11 and 10 personnel spread sets create clear speed mismatches on seams and option routes.
  • Zero coverage looks like Pinch Buck 0 and Dbl Safety Blitz give up the entire deep third if the pressure is picked up, and a single hot route to a slot fade ends the drive.
  • The strong side shift leaves the weak side C gap light on run downs, so opponents who identify the reduction can bounce outside zone and toss plays away from the nose.
  • Bunch and stack formations force zone matching from linebackers who lack the man coverage ratings to survive rub releases, especially against Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Hard Flat.
  • Heavy personnel cannot chase four verticals, so opponents who go tempo and never sub let you get stuck in a run-stopping front against empty and trips looks.

Usage Tips

Use this set on second and short and third and short against 21 or 22 personnel where you expect inside zone, then live in Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Quarters so you are never fully exposed if it is a play action shot.

Pre-snap read the offensive strength: if they align tight end strong to your reduced side, keep the front as is, but if they flip to the weak side, use a line shift audible to slide the nose and preserve gap integrity.

Run Cover 2 Invert and Cover 2 Invert Hard Flat back to back from the same look to bait out throws to the flat, then user control the invert safety to sit on the out and jump the timing.

Save Pinch Buck 0 and Dbl Safety Blitz for third and long or obvious dropback situations, and pair them with press manual adjustments so free releases do not turn into instant separation on slants.

When facing a mobile quarterback, default to Cov 1 QB Contain Spy or Cover 1 Hole WK instead of full pressure, since containing the pocket beats generating an unblocked rusher who overruns the play.

User the free safety in FS Slant 3 and Will Fire 3 Seam so you have a manual eraser over the top while the front handles the run fit on its own.
