SpecialistsRLERRENT

Overview

Even is the balanced front inside the 3-4, and despite the parent formation name the personnel listed here plays out as a Base 5-2 alignment: a nose tackle head up over the ball with a right left end and right right end set outside him, plus two inside linebackers stacked behind. That extra down lineman is the whole point of this set. Where a traditional 3-4 Odd or Stack look asks two outside linebackers to convert into rushers from a standing position, Even already has hands in the dirt on both edges, so your four man rush fires with better pad level and no wasted step on the snap. The tradeoff is a lighter second level: two linebackers instead of three means the coverage burden shifts to your safeties and nickel body.

Against the run, the nose tackle taking the A gap head up lets both inside linebackers flow clean to the ball rather than getting washed by a shaded one technique. That makes Even one of the better 3-4 sets for defending inside zone and duo without needing to commit a safety down. The Base 5-2 personnel tag also means you are on the field with a run stopping front, which is why Even shows up most often on first and second down, in short yardage, and when you are protecting a lead late.

The coverage menu is deeper than the front suggests. You get Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Cloud, and Cover 3 Match for zone shells, Tampa 2 for a deep middle answer, Cov 1 Robber Press and Cover 2 Man for man coverage, and pressure in Mike Scrape 3 Press, Cross Fire 3, Will Fire 3 Seam, and Pinch Buck 0. Because every one of those plays comes out of the same static front, an offense reading your line pre snap gets zero information, which is where Even earns its money in a user versus user game.

Strengths

  • Base 5-2 personnel with a head up nose tackle keeps both inside linebackers free to scrape, making Even a top tier first and second down run front without dropping a safety into the box.
  • Identical front presentation across ten plays: Cover 3 Sky, Cover 2 Man, Cov 1 Robber Press, and Pinch Buck 0 all show the same five down look, so opponents cannot read pressure or coverage from your line.
  • Cross Fire 3 and Will Fire 3 Seam generate interior pressure from the stacked inside linebackers, which attacks the A and B gaps that slide protection and running back checks handle worst.
  • Cover 3 Match punishes offenses that live on curl flat and smash concepts, since the match rules carry vertical releases instead of passing them off like base Cover 3 Sky.
  • Pinch Buck 0 is a legitimate zero blitz off a run look, ideal on third and short or two point stops when the offense is expecting Base personnel to play soft.

Weaknesses

  • Only two linebackers on the field means Even gets shredded by three and four receiver spread sets, and empty formations will force you into bad matchups on slot receivers.
  • Base 5-2 personnel puts slower coverage bodies in space, so seam routes against Cover 3 Sky and crossers against Cover 2 Man both need a user defender to clean up.
  • Tampa 2 is slow to develop out of this front because the inside linebacker carrying the deep middle starts from a tight stack, leaving the hole in front of the safeties exposed early in the route stem.
  • Blitzes like Cross Fire 3 and Mike Scrape 3 Press vacate the middle of the field, and a hot routed drag or a running back angle route out of the backfield sits right in the empty zone.
  • Press coverage in Cov 1 Robber Press and Mike Scrape 3 Press is exploitable by drag, slant, and mesh releases if your corners lack the press rating to win at the line.

Usage Tips

Live in Even on first and second down when the offense shows two back or two tight end personnel, then substitute out entirely once they go to three or more receivers rather than trying to defend spread with Base 5-2.

Rotate Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Cloud, and Cover 3 Match from the same front so the offense cannot tell which side the flat is being taken away, then break tendency with Cover 2 Man when they start attacking the sideline.

User the free safety in Cover 3 Match and Tampa 2 to erase the seam, which is the single most consistent way Even gets beat through the air.

Save Pinch Buck 0 for third and two or less and short yardage goal line stops, and manually shade coverage underneath before the snap so a blown hot route does not turn into a touchdown.

Pair Will Fire 3 Seam with a pinched defensive line and a linebacker QB spy hot route when facing a scrambling quarterback, since the five down front already seals the edges.

Pre snap, read the running back alignment and tight end side, then flip the front with a line shift so the right left end and right right end are matched against the strength instead of the play art default.
