Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback press alignment, if both safeties are deep at 10 to 12 yards and corners are showing man technique at the line, you are looking at a true Cover 2 Man shell that offers strong help against deep routes but is vulnerable to quick out and flat combinations. Watch for the running back or slot receiver releasing into the flat immediately after the snap, since underneath man defenders can get beat on quick option routes if they bite on any hesitation move. Post-snap, key the linebackers assigned to tight ends or backs out of the backfield, if they get picked or rerouted by traffic near the line, that is where quarterbacks will target first against this coverage. This shell beats vertical shots and double moves thanks to safety help over the top, but it can be exploited by rub routes, mesh concepts, and any scheme designed to create natural picks against man defenders. Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to attack with quick game or intermediate crossers since your underneath defenders have full man support. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running a bunch or stack formation because man coverage can get picked, so consider a quick audible into Cov 1 Robber Press if you see heavy stack alignments. User the deep safety over the receiver you expect the quarterback to key first, usually the number one or number two target in a 2x2 set, and stay square to break on comeback or dig routes. Mix this in after showing Tampa 2 or Cover 3 Sky from the same formation so the quarterback cannot get a pre-snap read on whether you are dropping to zone or locking up man, which keeps play action passing games honest. Avoid calling this against heavy trips or four verticals formations unless you have a plan to double the number one receiver, since your corners are on an island underneath the safety help.
