Breakdown

Cross Fire 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the 3-4 Even Base 5-2 personnel. Both outside linebackers drop into underneath zones (purple ovals) while the two inside defenders execute a crossing line stunt through the interior gaps, with one looping wide as a contain rusher and the other looping inside to fill. Behind the pressure, three deep defenders (dark blue) run vertical zone drops while the middle underneath defender (olive) sits in a shallow hook zone, giving you a Cover 3 shell with five underneath and three deep. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still protecting the middle of the field, so your primary read is confirming the stunt gets home off the edge before the quarterback can climb the pocket, then working from the deep thirds to the hook defender if the quarterback escapes the rush.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment to confirm you are getting a true Cover 3 shell with three deep defenders rather than a disguised two high look, since the stunt is vulnerable if the offense diagnoses one-high and attacks the seams. Post-snap, key the interior line stunt losing contain, because if the looping rusher gets picked off by a lineman the quarterback gets a clean interior lane and your coverage shell is exposed for a long developing play. This look beats man beater route combos and slow developing play-action rollouts since the crossing stunt collapses the pocket before routes can fully break, but it struggles against hot RPOs and quick game to the flats where the ball is out before the stunt develops. Watch the middle hook defender in the olive zone, since a scheme fit with two crossing routes underneath can overload that single defender if he does not sink deep enough into his drop. If the running back leaks out to the flat immediately after the snap, that is a signal the offense is using him as a check-down against your blitz, so the outside underneath zone defenders need to expand quickly.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second-and-medium when the offense is likely to run standard drop back protection, since the line stunt needs a clean release to threaten the quarterback. Pre-snap, check the offensive line for slide protection or a running back staying in to chip, because a max protect look can neutralize the interior stunt and leave you rushing four into six blockers. User the looping edge rusher off the stunt to control the quarterback's escape lane and force him back into the pocket where your interior man is looping to clean up. If you diagnose a quick game or screen at the line, consider audibling to Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud from this same set to get an extra body in the box without sacrificing the deep thirds. Pair this call with Mike Scrape 3 Press or Pinch Buck 0 in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on the stunt look and start sitting on hot reads underneath.
