Will Fire 3 Seam is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the 3-4 Even Base 5-2 personnel that sends the Will linebacker on a fire zone blitz while dropping five defenders into a three-deep, three-under shell. The diagram shows both outside cornerbacks sinking into deep thirds, the deep safety splitting the middle third, and the underneath zone covered by a curl defender to the flat and a seam flat defender working the short middle, while four rushers (including the blitzing linebacker) attack downhill off the snap. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still maintaining sound three-deep coverage integrity, and the primary read progression for the defense is to trigger the Will blitz off the snap read, then fall back on zone spacing underneath to squeeze any hot routes or quick game before the deep thirds erase anything over the top.
Watch for offenses attacking the seam or middle read against Cover 3 since the deep safety only has one true deep middle defender, if the offense stacks two receivers on the same seam this can be attacked before the blitz gets home Key on the running back or slot receiver checking down into the vacated blitz lane, the underneath zone defenders must react fast to close throwing lanes created by the Will blitz If the offense shows empty or spread formations pre-snap, expect quick game or hot routes designed to exploit blitz pressure before the fire zone drops are set Look for play-action or RPO concepts that hold the underneath defenders, since a slow linebacker read can open up the intermediate crossers behind the blitz This concept gets shut down by quick play-action rollouts that flood one side of the field, forcing conflicted zone defenders into no-win reads between run support and pass drops
Call this out of Base 5-2 personnel on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to run quick game or attack off play-action since the fire zone pressure disrupts rhythm throws
Disguise the Will blitz by showing a two high shell pre-snap then rotating the safety down into the deep third at the snap to bait quarterbacks into thinking they have single high or two high beaters
User the Will linebacker yourself if you want to control the A gap or B gap rush lane and spy mobile quarterbacks who like to escape the pocket on designed rollouts
Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud in the same set to keep the same shell look presnap while varying who blitzes, this keeps quarterbacks guessing on which underneath defender is vacating
Use this on money downs against teams that live on hot route sight adjustments since the underneath zone defenders squeeze the middle and take away quick game beaters before the blitz even arrives
