Breakdown

This is the Tampa 2 zone coverage from the Even 3-4 Base 5-2 personnel. Both outside cornerbacks sink to the deep quarters while the two deep safeties bracket the middle, and the Mike linebacker (the olive icon) pushes vertically up the seam to cap the deep middle void, which is the defining trait of Tampa 2. Underneath, the two remaining linebackers and the flanking defenders sit in curl to flat and hook zones, with four defenders shown crashing downhill on run support or shallow flat responsibilities. This is a zone coverage shell built to defend deep middle throws and vertical shots down the field, not a blitz or man beater, and the primary read progression for the defense starts with the Mike's carry of any seam or dig route before working out to the flat defenders on shorter combination routes.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth. Two deep safeties split evenly with the Mike showing a walk up alignment usually tips Tampa 2 rather than standard Cover 2. Watch cornerback press versus off alignment. Off corners sinking immediately at the snap confirms the deep quarters responsibility typical of this call. Post snap, track the Mike linebacker's vertical push. If he gets a clean drop he erases deep in cuts, digs, and posts that normally torch standard Cover 2 shells. This shell is vulnerable to quick outs and flat routes attacking the void the Mike vacates underneath, along with any four verticals concept that stretches the two deep safeties horizontally. Be alert for user pressure off the edge from the 3-4 front, since the outside linebackers can be blitzed off this same look to disguise the coverage rotation behind them.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and long when you expect a vertical shot play or a deep dig concept from the offense.

Key the Mike linebacker before the snap. If the offense sees him bail into the deep middle they will often check into a shallow flood concept, so be ready to sink your flat defenders quickly.

User the Mike linebacker yourself to rob any deep in or seam route, since a computer controlled Mike can be late getting to his landmark against fast vertical releases.

Mix this play with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud in the same set to disguise your shell, since all three show similar pre snap safety alignment but rotate very differently after the snap.

Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel or when facing empty formations, since the underneath defenders can be outnumbered in the flat and the Mike's vertical drop leaves the box light.
