Bear

Bear is the defensive answer inside the 3-4 formation, and it separates itself from standard 3-4 sets like Odd, Predator, or Under by walking down to a Base 5-2 personnel alignment. You get a nose tackle covering the center head up, two ends aligned over the guards (the RLE and RRE tags), and effectively five down bodies with two linebackers stacked behind them. That front takes away the A gaps and both B gaps before the snap, which is why Bear is the go to call when an opponent leans on inside zone, dive reads, and QB power out of heavy sets.

The tradeoff is coverage math, and the playbook reflects it. Bear gives you a tight menu built around Cover 2 Invert, Cover 3, Cover 3 Hard Flat, Cover 2 Invert Hard Flat, Trio Sky Zone, and Cover 1 Hole, plus Sam Mike 1, Will Sam 1, and LB Blitz 0 for pressure. With only two true linebackers behind the front, the invert calls are how you get safeties involved in the run fit without abandoning deep help. Cover 1 Hole is the best matchup call here because it lets you user the hole player and squeeze crossers that would normally run free against a five man front.

Where Bear creates matchup advantages is in the trenches and on the back end simultaneously. The five down look forces offenses into single back protections and one on one blocking, meaning your best pass rusher gets a guard or a back instead of a chip and slide combo. Against 2x2 and bunch sets, Trio Sky Zone lets you rotate coverage strength without motioning defenders out of the box, so you keep the run fit intact while still bracketing the isolated X receiver on the backside.
