Scheme Playbook
Madden Defense is the game's baseline generic defensive scheme book, 118 plays spread across 8 formations and 12 sets. It is the smallest of the six defensive scheme playbooks in the game, and that is by design: instead of burying you in situational one off blitzes, it gives you a clean, coverage first menu built around Nickel (36 plays, 31% of the book) and 3-4 (24 plays, 20%). Add Dime (18 plays, 15%) and you have two thirds of the playbook devoted to sub packages and a two gapping front, which tells you exactly how it wants to be played: nickel and dime on most snaps, 3-4 when you need to play the run without leaving the field in base.
The concept list is coverage heavy and deliberately simple. Cover 1, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 2, Cover 3, straight Zone Coverage and Man Coverage make up the spine, with Inverted Coverage giving you a disguise shell and Blitz, LB Blitz, Cover 0 and Zero Blitz sitting on top as pressure options. Sample calls like Cover 1 Hole out of Nickel, 1 Double Wr1, 60 Half Out and 3 Double Buzz show the pattern: single high man with a hole player to wall crossers, halves coverage to kill sideline concepts, and buzz variants that drop a defender into the curl flat. 3 Deep Blitz is the pressure call you pair with those shells when you want five rushing and three deep behind it.
What separates Madden Defense from a differently weighted book is the personnel range packed into a small play count. It carries Base 5-2, Base 4-3, 4-4-3, Dime 4-1-6, 6-2-3, Nickel 3-3-5, Nickel 4-2-5 and Big Quarter 3-1-7, which means you can go from a seven man secondary to a six man front without leaving the playbook. The 5-2 formation shows up in only 15 of the game's 236 playbooks, so opponents rarely have reps against it, and the 13 play Goal Line Defense group across 3 sets plus a 6 play Prevent set covers the two situations most scheme books shortchange. Pick this one if you want a coverage foundation you can actually learn end to end, with rare fronts and goal line answers attached, rather than a sprawling blitz catalog.
Madden Defense wants a roster built around secondary depth: three or more corners you trust in man coverage since Cover 1, Cover 1 Hole and Cover 0 anchor the book, plus a high awareness free safety who can play the deep middle and a zone coverage safety you can drop into the buzz on 3 Double Buzz. The 3-4 and 5-2 blocks need two gapping interior linemen with block shedding and strength, and at least one edge linebacker with real finesse moves, because the pressure list is small enough that you have to win one on one rather than scheme guys free. This is the playbook for a user defender who prefers to control a safety or hook linebacker, disguise shells presnap, and win with coverage discipline instead of hunting for a nano, and it suits players who want a compact 118 play book they can master rather than a sprawling blitz heavy alternative.

Build your primary audible package out of Nickel, using Nickel 4-2-5 as your every down front and Nickel 3-3-5 as your second and long, third and medium look so you can flip between Cover 3, Cover 1 Hole and Zero Blitz from an identical presnap picture.
Reach for 3-4 on first and second down inside the ten to fifteen yard line and in short yardage, where the 24 plays and four linebacker personnel let you fit the run and still drop into Cover 2 or Zone Coverage without a substitution.
Save 5-2 for third and one, fourth and short and obvious quarterback sneak or power looks; with only 15 playbooks in the game carrying the formation, opponents will not have a rehearsed answer to the 6-2-3 front.
Go to Dime 4-1-6 or Big Quarter 3-1-7 on third and long and any two minute drive, and pair 60 Half Out with a user controlled safety to bracket the boundary while you shade the hook defenders inside.
Keep Goal Line Defense loaded in your red zone audible slot given it carries 13 plays across 3 sets, and hold Prevent strictly for the final snap or two of a half rather than treating its 6 plays as a general third and long call.
