Key the robber or hook defender sitting underneath the deep safety, he is there to eliminate crossing routes and shallow drags that typically beat man coverage. This call gets exposed against quick game and option routes since the corners are playing trail technique and can be beaten by sharp cuts before the extra rusher gets home. Identify the blitzer's path immediately after the snap, if he drops into a spy instead of rushing, hold your check down or scramble drill routes since the quarterback has less room to operate. This coverage shell is vulnerable to double moves and skinny posts against man press corners, but it dominates against option routes and shallow crosses since the underneath defenders have eyes locked on their assigned receivers.
Usage Tips
Check the pre-snap safety alignment first, if you see one safety rotated deep and no second high safety showing, you are almost certainly facing this Cover 1 look or a variant of it.
Use motion across the formation to identify if the defense is truly in man coverage, if a defender follows your receiver across the field that confirms man and you can attack with your best route runner in isolation.
Hot route your slot receiver into a quick option or slant to defeat the underneath robber defender sitting in the middle of the field before the extra rusher closes the pocket.
This play excels on early downs and second and short since the single high shell is vulnerable to a go route or post if your receiver wins the release against man press.
