Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the free safety depth. If he is shaded near the box already, the disguise is weaker and savvy offenses will hot route into that side to attack the vacated deep middle. Post-snap, watch for the running back releasing into the flat or a tight end sliding into the void left by the blitzing safety, since both are the natural hot read against this pressure. This play beats teams that rely on quick game and three step timing routes because the underneath zone droppers close on curls, hitches, and drags before the ball arrives. It is vulnerable to play-action rollouts and deep shots over the middle since the safety help vacates that area the instant he triggers downhill. Watch the offensive line protection slide: if they slide toward the safety's blitz path pre-snap, that is a strong indicator the quarterback has identified the pressure and will look to attack the opposite side or check it down immediately.
Usage Tips
Call FS Blitz on early downs or obvious passing situations where the offense is likely to use a quick game or three step drop, since the free safety needs minimal time to close the distance. Check the pre-snap alignment of the running back and slot receiver: if you see a quick screen or bubble RPO look, consider audibling to Zone Blitz instead since FS Blitz leaves the box light against those concepts. User the free safety yourself right at the snap to control his blitz angle and avoid getting picked off by a fullback or tight end blocker. Disguise this call by showing the same shell as Cover 3 or Cover 3 Match pre-snap, then bring the safety late to keep the quarterback guessing on where the extra rusher originates. Pair this play in a sequence with Cover 1 and Engage Eight so the offense cannot key on safety depth as a tell for pressure versus coverage.
