Bear 46 is the heavy front variant inside the 3-4, and it plays nothing like Odd or 3-4 Even. Instead of two-gapping with a lone nose and letting the outside linebackers sort the edges, Bear 46 walks five defenders down onto the line in a Base 5-2 personnel look, covering both guards and the center simultaneously. The NT tag matters here: your nose tackle is aligned directly over the center with 3 techniques or heavy ends shading both guards, which means every interior offensive lineman is occupied one on one before the snap. That is the entire premise of the set, and it is why Engage Eight and the Pinch pressures out of this alignment collapse pockets faster than anything in the standard 3-4 tree.
The coverage menu is intentionally thin because the alignment is not built to sit back. You get Pinch Buck 0, Pinch Mike 0, and Will SS 0 as true zero blitzes with no deep help, Will Sam 1 and Sam Mike 1 as single high pressures, Buck SS 3 and Pinch Dog 3 as three deep fire zones, and Cover 2 Invert as the lone two high changeup. Engage Eight is the max pressure trigger that sends everything and leaves your corners on islands. Because there are only two true linebackers behind the front in Base 5-2, the middle of the field is structurally light, so every call in this set is asking the pressure to arrive before the read develops.
Where Bear 46 creates a matchup edge is at the point of attack. With both guards and the center engaged, offenses cannot slide protection to help a beaten interior lineman, and running backs in max protect have to guess which of the two mugged linebackers is actually coming. Against 21 personnel and heavy sets, the five man front reduces the box and makes inside zone and duo a losing proposition. Against empty and spread looks, you are trading coverage integrity for a free rusher, so the set functions as a situational hammer rather than a base call.
Deploy Bear 46 on third and short, fourth down, and inside your own twenty where offenses shrink their route trees and cannot fully exploit the light middle.
Check the offensive personnel first: bring this out against 21 and 22 personnel heavy sets, and get out of it against empty or trips where the alignment leaves too many uncovered defenders.
Alternate Pinch Buck 0 and Pinch Mike 0 from identical alignments so the opponent cannot pre snap identify the free rusher, then mix in Cover 2 Invert once they start throwing hot.
User a linebacker or the safety rather than a rusher, since the front generates pressure on its own and your manual coverage is what closes the middle window.
Hot route your flat defender or curl player to plug the shallow crosser if the opponent has been beating you with drags underneath the blitz.
Use Buck SS 3 or Pinch Dog 3 as your safe pressure calls on second down, saving Engage Eight for obvious max protect or must stop situations.
Pinch your ends and shift your line pre snap on run heavy downs to further reduce interior gaps before committing to the call.
