Pre snap, check if the offense is aligned in a spread empty formation, since Cover 2 Invert is more vulnerable to seam shots and deep crossing routes when your linebackers have to cover more ground underneath. Watch the cornerback depth at the snap: if they are bailing deep immediately, the invert is on, and you should expect the safeties to be rolling down into curl and flat responsibilities. Post snap, key the flat defenders first since Cover 2 Invert is designed to jump hitches, quick outs, and flat routes that quarterbacks throw expecting a traditional soft corner zone. This shell shuts down man beater concepts like slants and out and up combos since the underneath defenders are reading route breaks rather than mirroring receivers. Be alert for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the passing lanes on curl to flat combos, since a smart user will jump the route stem before the ball is thrown, baiting the quarterback into an interception read.
Disguise this call by aligning your safeties in a standard two deep look pre snap, then rotate them down into the invert at the snap to bait quarterbacks into throwing hot routes into what they think is a soft zone.
