Will SS 0 is a Cover 0 man blitz out of the 3-4 Bear 46 formation in Base 5-2 personnel, sending the Will linebacker and Strong Safety on pressure packages while the rest of the defense locks up in pure man coverage with zero deep help. This is a run stopping, quick pressure blitz designed to disrupt timing routes and collapse the pocket before the quarterback can climb the ladder through his progression. The primary read for the defense is straight man technique, so as the play caller you are betting on the pressure winning before receivers separate downfield, meaning the free rushers off the edge or interior gap are the actual first read for the design.
Watch for trips or bunch formations pre-snap since these create natural picks against man defenders and can spring receivers open instantly against Cover 0 Key on the running back release out of the backfield, since with no deep safety a check release into the flat or a wheel route is a common answer to this blitz and must be accounted for by a spying linebacker Look at offensive line splits and protection sliding pre-snap, since wide splits or a six man protection tell you the quarterback expects pressure and may be hot routing into a quick throw beating your blitz If the quarterback quickly resets his feet and looks to one side immediately after the snap, that usually signals a pre-determined hot route beater designed specifically against zero blitz looks Shut this down against play designs with immediate slant or hitch concepts to the boundary, since those routes convert faster than your rush can generate pressure, giving the defense outdated leverage before the ball is out
Call this on early downs or short yardage third downs when you expect run or a quick game passing concept, since Cover 0 has no deep safety help against verticals
Identify the offensive formation pre-snap and check for stacked or bunch receiver sets that can create natural rub routes against your man defenders, and adjust your DBs with press or bail technique accordingly
Use user control on the most athletic defender, typically the Strong Safety or a linebacker, to spy the quarterback or jump the most obvious hot route if you suspect a screen or RPO
Mix this in after running Pinch Mike 0 or Pinch Buck 0 so opponents cannot key blitz direction based on formation tendencies, keeping the same Cover 0 look with different pressure gaps
Avoid calling this against known vertical passing teams on obvious passing downs unless you are confident your corners can hold up in isolation without safety help
