Pinch Dog 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Bear 46 3-4 formation designed to disguise pressure while keeping three deep defenders over the top. The defensive line pinches down to collapse the interior pocket while a linebacker or safety comes off the edge as the fourth or fifth rusher, with the remaining defenders dropping into a standard Cover 3 shell (three deep, four underneath). This is a zone based blitz package meant to beat both the run and quick game, and the primary read starts with identifying the underneath flow to the flats and curl zones before eyeing the deep middle third defender if the quarterback holds the ball.
Pre-snap, check the safety depth and cornerback alignment to confirm you are getting a standard Cover 3 shell rather than getting exposed to a two high look that the pinch blitz cannot cover as well. Watch for the running back to check release into the flat, since the pinch front commits extra rushers up front and can leave the flat defender in conflict against a check and release into space. Man beater route combos like slants and quick outs against the underneath flat defenders can exploit the zone if the blitz timing is off or if a defender bites on run action. This call is vulnerable to play-action rollouts and RPOs that hold the pinching defensive line at the snap, since the interior rush lanes can be manipulated by run fakes. Post-snap, user the deep middle third defender to erase any vertical shot down the seam or middle of the field, since that is the biggest scheme fit weakness if the blitz does not get home in time.
Use Pinch Dog 3 on early downs when you expect a run or quick game passing concept, since the pinch technique clogs interior gaps and disrupts inside zone or dive plays before they develop.
Check the offensive formation pre-snap for bunch or stack sets that could isolate your flat defender, and consider audibling the underneath zone drops if you see a heavy trips look to one side.
Pair this call with Pinch Buck 0 and Pinch Mike 0 in the same set to keep the pinch front look consistent while varying the blitzer, making it harder for offensive linemen to identify the extra rusher in pass protection.
Bait the quarterback into throwing hot into the flat or quick out route by showing the same pre-snap picture as Cover 2 Invert, then rely on the deep third defenders to close off any go routes down the sideline.
Save this play for third and short or second and medium situations where the pinch front pressure and shortened underneath zones can force a quick, contested throw.
