Tite

SpecialistsRLERRENT

Overview

Tite is the odd front outlier inside the 3-4, and it plays nothing like 3-4 Odd or 3-4 Even. Instead of spreading the three down linemen across the tackles and guards, Tite condenses them into a true 5-2 look: the nose tackle sits head up over the center with both ends aligned inside the offensive tackles, and the two outside linebackers walk up on the edges. That gives you five bodies on the line of scrimmage with only two true off ball linebackers, which is why the personnel reads as Base 5-2 with NT, RLE, and RRE tags. The result is a front that swallows interior gaps pre-snap without you having to pinch or commit a run blitz.

The real advantage is disguise. Because both outside linebackers are already on the line, the offense cannot tell from the alignment whether you are rushing four, five, or dropping into a seven man shell. Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 6, and Tampa 2 all deploy from the exact same picture, and the Saw Blitz family (0, 1, 2, 3) sends pressure off the edge from that same stacked front. Against a competent user, that means your Cover 4 Drop and your Saw Blitz 0 look identical until the ball is snapped.

Personnel wise, Tite is a matchup tool against two tight end and heavy sets. You keep five linemen on the field to handle 21 and 12 personnel gap schemes while retaining enough coverage shells to survive a run pass option or play action rollout. Where Tite isolates receivers is in the coverage variants: Cov 3 Match Bench and Cov 3 Match Field let you rotate strength to one side and leave a single receiver on an island against your best press corner, while SS 2 Trap and Trio Sky Zone give you bait looks that invite throws into robbers and trap defenders.

Strengths

  • Elite interior run defense by alignment: the nose tackle over center and both ends inside the tackles cover A and B gaps without any pre-snap pinch or run commit call.
  • Pressure disguise is the best in the 3-4 family because both outside linebackers start on the line, so Saw Blitz 0, Saw Blitz 1, Saw Blitz 2, and Saw Blitz 3 all show the same picture as Cover 4 Drop and Tampa 2.
  • Deep coverage variety from one front: Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 6, and Tampa 2 let you rotate shells every snap while your opponent sees an identical five man front.
  • Match coverage options (Cover 3 Match, Cov 3 Match Bench, Cov 3 Match Field) carry vertical route stems and shut down the seam and post concepts that normally torch spot drop zone.
  • SS 2 Trap and Trio Sky Zone are ideal user bait looks: show two high, trap the flat or the curl, and user the free safety over the top for high percentage picks.

Weaknesses

  • Only two off ball linebackers means flood concepts and horizontal stretch to the field side can outnumber your second level in a hurry.
  • The condensed front leaves both edges soft in base coverage calls, so outside zone, stretch runs, and quarterback designed runs get to the perimeter before your outside linebackers can turn and constrain.
  • Saw Blitz 0 has zero deep help, so any quick out, slot fade, or hot routed streak beats it if the offense identifies the pressure pre-snap.
  • Five linemen on the field is a liability against 10 and 11 personnel spread sets: linemen in coverage get exposed on option routes and mismatched in the slot when the offense motions to empty.
  • Experienced users will motion a tight end or back to identify your rotation, then attack the vacated side of Cov 3 Match Bench or Cov 3 Match Field with a corner or deep out.

Usage Tips

Live in Tite on early downs against 21, 12, and 22 personnel. It is your answer to inside zone and power gap schemes without needing a dedicated run blitz.

Rotate the Saw Blitz family and the coverage shells from the same front. Run Saw Blitz 3 on one snap and Cover 4 Drop on the next so your opponent cannot commit to a protection slide.

Check the offense's alignment before committing: if you see 10 or 11 personnel with a wide slot, audible out of Tite entirely or you will have a defensive lineman matched on a receiver.

Use Cov 3 Match Field against strong side heavy formations and Cov 3 Match Bench when the offense puts its best receiver near the sideline, then user the corner opposite the rotation.

Save Saw Blitz 0 and Hot Blitz 3 for third down and long or as a change up after two or three straight coverage calls. Both are burned if the offense has already read your pressure tendency.

Manually shade coverage inside and user the hole defender in Cover 1 Hole to erase drag and dig combos over the middle.
