Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, confirm both safeties are aligned deep at equal depth to sell the two-high shell before the middle linebacker rotates into his deep hole drop. Watch the corners at the snap: if they sink too fast into their flat zones, quick outs and speed motion flats can beat them before the zone sets. Post-snap, track the Mike linebacker's drop, this is the key defender who erases deep middle throws and post routes that try to split the safeties. This shell struggles against high low flood concepts to one side that overload the flat and curl zones with three receivers. It shuts down four verticals and deep post shots because of the extra deep defender in the middle of the field, so expect offenses to check into underneath quick game instead.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or obvious pass situations where you expect the offense to test the deep middle or attack vertical seams.
Key the opposing offense's formation for stacked or bunch releases that can flood one flat zone before the snap.
User the Mike linebacker in his deep drop to jump any deep crosser or seam route that tries to split the two safeties.
Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters from the same Tite set so your pre-snap disguise stays consistent and quarterbacks cannot key the middle linebacker's drop depth.
Avoid calling this on third and short since the underneath zone drops can be slow to react to quick game and RPO throws.
