Playbooks
Colts Defense and its sibling cut, NFL Live Colts Defense, are functionally the same book. They share all 325 plays and differ by zero sets, so picking one over the other is a naming preference, not a strategic decision. Anything you learn in one transfers one to one into the other, including your audible package layout and formation subs.
What you are actually getting is a sub-package defense. Nickel accounts for 117 plays (36%) across 8 sets and Dime adds another 87 plays (27%) across 4 sets, which means nearly two thirds of this 325 play book is already in a five or six defensive back shell before you make a single adjustment. The 3-4 is the only real base front at 39 plays (12%) across 3 sets, with 4-3 down to just 15 plays (5%) across 2 sets. Personnel groupings reinforce that tilt: Big Dime 3-2-6, Big Dime 4-1-6, Dime 4-1-6, Dime 3-2-6 and Big Quarter 3-1-7 all live here, along with Nickel 4-2-5, Big Nickel 4-2-5, Base 5-2, Base 4-3, Base 3-4 and 6-2-3 for goal line.
The concept list matches the personnel: Cover 1, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 3, Cover 3 Sky, Man Coverage, Zone Coverage, plus Blitz, LB Blitz, Line Stunt, Pinch and Run Stop. Plays like Cover 1 Robber Press, Cov 1 QB Contain Spy, 3 Deep Blitz and Corner Blitz 3 tell you the game plan: play man or single high behind pressure, spy mobile quarterbacks, and win from sub personnel rather than trying to out-muscle anyone from a base front. This is a book for a user who wants to sit in Nickel and Dime on early downs and dare offenses to run at light boxes.
This playbook wants a secondary-first roster: two press-capable outside corners with high man coverage and press ratings, a rangy free safety who can hold the deep middle in Cover 1 and Cover 3, and a third and fourth defensive back good enough to play real snaps since 63% of the book is Nickel or Dime. You also need at least one linebacker with speed and pursuit for the spy and hole responsibilities, plus edge rushers who can win one on one because Blitz, LB Blitz and Line Stunt calls leave you short in coverage when they do not get home. Pick Colts Defense if you are a user-heavy player who enjoys manually controlling a robber or spy and is comfortable playing sub personnel on early downs, and avoid it if your defensive identity is stopping the run from a base front.
Search every playbook by tag and personnel grouping, not just Colts Defense.
Build your primary audible package out of Nickel, since 8 sets and 117 plays live there, and set your four audibles as a Cover 1 Hole call, a Cover 3 Sky call, an LB Blitz and a Run Stop so you can answer any early down look without changing formations.
On third and long, go straight to Dime and rotate between Big Dime 3-2-6, Big Dime 4-1-6, Dime 4-1-6 and Dime 3-2-6, using Corner Blitz 3 and 3 Deep Blitz when you need pressure and 60 Half Out when you want to bracket and force a checkdown.
Save the 3-4 (39 plays, 3 sets) for first and ten against heavy personnel and short yardage between the 20s, and use Pinch and Line Stunt calls from there rather than trying to stop the run out of your five defensive back looks.
Call Cov 1 QB Contain Spy against mobile quarterbacks on any passing down and user the spy yourself, since the single high concepts in this book leak badly when the quarterback escapes the pocket.
Reserve Goal Line Defense (13 plays, 3 sets, 6-2-3 personnel) for inside the five and Prevent (6 plays, 1 set) strictly for the final snap of a half, because neither has the depth to be used as a situational package across multiple drives.
