Overview

Cub is the heavy interior sub-package inside the 3-4 formation, and the play list gives it away immediately: Gap Press, Olb Blitz, Sting Pinch, Trio Sky Zone, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 3 Sky, Cover 4 Quarters, and Strike Spy 2. This is a defensive set, so the "personnel group" listed as Base 5-2 with the NT tag means you are lining up with a true nose tackle over the center and a compressed interior front rather than the spread out edge alignment you get from 3-4 Odd or the wide nine looks in other 3-4 sets. The two inside linebackers play tighter to the line of scrimmage than they do in 3-4 Under, which shrinks the A and B gaps and forces offenses to bounce runs outside where your outside linebackers can constrain.

What separates Cub from the rest of the 3-4 tree is gap integrity without committing extra bodies. Sting Pinch slants the entire front inside, which is one of the better single call answers to inside zone and QB draw in Madden because the nose tackle occupies the center and both defensive ends crash into the guards. Gap Press and Olb Blitz give you two distinct pressure flavors from the same shell: one that attacks interior gaps and one that brings an edge rusher off the outside linebacker spot while keeping four in coverage. Because the alignment looks identical pre-snap, an opponent reading your front cannot tell whether you are sending five or dropping into Cover 3 Sky.

On the coverage side, Cub carries a full menu: Cover 1 Hole for man matchups with a rat in the middle, Cover 3 Sky for standard zone with a strong safety rolled down, Cover 4 Quarters for four verticals and deep shot protection, Trio Sky Zone for a three deep look with underneath help to the trips side, and Strike Spy 2 for scrambling quarterbacks. That spread of shells out of one alignment is what makes this set so hard to read in competitive lobbies. The nose tackle personnel means you are strong against interior runs by default, so your play calling energy goes into disguising the back end instead of patching the run fit.

Strengths

  • Sting Pinch is one of the most reliable inside run stuffers available, collapsing A and B gaps with the nose tackle anchoring the center and both ends slanting down, which shuts off inside zone, dive, and QB draw without needing a linebacker blitz.
  • Coverage disguise potential is elite because Cover 1 Hole, Cover 3 Sky, Cover 4 Quarters, and Trio Sky Zone all break from the same compressed front, so opponents cannot identify man or zone off your alignment and have to guess post snap.
  • Olb Blitz generates edge pressure from a stand up outside linebacker while keeping seven in coverage, which is the profile you want against short passing attacks where a full nano blitz would leave you exposed to hot routes.
  • Strike Spy 2 handles scrambling quarterbacks natively, pairing a spy with two deep safeties so you do not have to burn a user defender babysitting the pocket on third and long.
  • Cover 4 Quarters out of a run heavy front is a strong bait call, since offenses reading the pinched interior expect single high and will throw into four deep defenders on a shot play.

Weaknesses

  • The compressed interior alignment means outside zone, tosses, and stretch runs get to the edge fast, especially when Sting Pinch has already slanted your ends inside and taken away their contain responsibility.
  • Cover 3 Sky and Trio Sky Zone both leave the flats soft, so opponents will attack you with quick outs, swing routes to the back, and bubble concepts before your outside linebacker can drop and drive.
  • Only two true pressure calls (Gap Press and Olb Blitz) means experienced opponents will identify your blitz tendency within a few series and slide protection to the strong side or chip with the running back.
  • Cover 1 Hole leaves your inside linebackers matched on running backs and tight ends in space, which is a losing proposition against high speed receiving backs unless you take user control of that matchup.
  • With a nose tackle heavy front you are light on speed rushers, so pure four man rush pressure is slow to develop against a quarterback who steps up and resets in the pocket.

Usage Tips

Call Sting Pinch on obvious run downs (second and short, goal line, four minute offense) and let the front eat the interior while you user the free inside linebacker to fill the bounce lane.

Alternate Gap Press and Olb Blitz from identical pre snap looks so your opponent never gets a clean protection read, and mix in Cover 3 Sky from the same alignment to punish audibles into max protect.

Use Strike Spy 2 on third and seven or longer against mobile quarterbacks, then user the free safety over the top instead of the spy since the spy handles the scramble automatically.

Trio Sky Zone is your answer to trips and bunch sets, but manually shade coverage inside or hot route your flat defender wider if the offense keeps hitting the sideline out route.

Show Cover 1 Hole pre snap, then shift the defensive line before the snap to sell pressure, which baits hot route sight adjustments into the hole defender sitting underneath.
