Cover 1 Hole is a man coverage defensive call out of the 3-4 Cub Base 5-2 personnel that puts a single-high safety over the top while five defenders (four rushers plus the hole defender underneath) attack downhill against the run or short passing game. The diagram shows the deep safety rotating to the middle of the field for the true single-high shell, with the underneath defender (hole player) sitting in the middle zone to rob crossing routes and shallow drags. Four down linemen and linebackers are shown attacking the line of scrimmage on run fits, making this primarily a run-stopping man coverage call with a spy element underneath rather than a blitz-heavy pressure package.
Pre-snap, identify the single deep safety alignment which confirms Cover 1 and tells the offense you are in man coverage across the board with one deep defender. Watch for offenses running double moves or deep comebacks against your man corners since Cover 1 has no second deep defender to help over the top outside of the single safety. Post-snap, track the hole defender's leverage on shallow crossing routes and mesh concepts, this is your primary defender against man beaters that try to rub or pick your cornerbacks. This shell is vulnerable to quick out-breaking routes and speed cuts against man coverage, especially if your corners do not have elite man coverage ratings or get beat off the line. Beware of offenses that identify single-high pre-snap and immediately attack with four verticals or deep post routes, since your safety must be disciplined to stay in the deep middle hole and not bite on any single route.
Use Cover 1 Hole on run-heavy down and distance situations like second and short or first and ten when you expect inside zone or gap runs, since the five underneath defenders are keyed to attack downhill immediately at the snap.
Pre-snap, check for stacked receivers or bunch formations that create natural picks against man coverage, and be ready to bump your corners or motion your hole defender to match late shifts.
The hole defender is your eraser against shallow crossers, drags, and spot routes, so user him if you see quick game concepts like slants or flat routes designed to attack the middle void in man coverage.
Pair this call with Trio Sky Zone or Cover 3 Sky on early downs to disguise whether you are in man or zone, forcing the offense to guess between single-high man and zone drops before the snap.
Avoid calling this against heavy play-action rollout concepts on early downs since your linebackers are triggered to run fits and can be susceptible to boot action if the offense sells the run fake well.
