Gap Press is a run stop defensive play out of the 3-4 Cub Base 5-2 personnel, designed to attack downhill and fill gaps at the snap. The diagram shows all five down linemen and linebackers firing forward with hard vertical arrows into the gaps, indicating a gap penetration scheme rather than a coverage drop, while two underneath defenders (shown as dots) hold shallow zone or man responsibility over the middle. This is a pure run defense call with no pass rush finesse, built to blow up inside runs and stuff blockers at the point of attack before the ball carrier reaches the line of scrimmage.
Pre-snap, check the running back alignment and offensive line splits to confirm you are getting an inside run look before snapping into Gap Press. Post-snap, key the fullback or lead blocker path since Gap Press is designed to have your linebackers beat blockers to the hole before they can seal the gap. This play gets exposed hard against play-action, since the aggressive gap shooters leave the intermediate and deep middle completely vacated if the offense fakes the run. Watch for offenses using misdirection or counter runs, as the hard vertical gap shoots can be manipulated by pullers and lead blockers if you do not user the correct gap. If the offense comes out in shotgun spread or empty formations, expect a pass and consider audibling out of Gap Press into a coverage-based call from the set instead.
Call Gap Press on early downs when you expect inside zone, dive, or gap runs based on offensive personnel and formation tendencies.
Use pre-snap alignment reads to confirm the offense is in a run-heavy set, such as heavy personnel or an unbalanced line, before committing to this call.
Avoid using this play on clear passing downs since the aggressive gap fills leave you exposed to play-action rollouts and RPOs if the offense sells run action.
Pair Gap Press with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 3 Sky on second and third down to keep offenses guessing between a downhill run stuff and a standard coverage shell.
User the middle linebacker at the snap to close the biggest gap based on the blocking scheme you diagnose, since this play relies heavily on user execution at the point of attack.
