Trio Sky Zone is a zone coverage call out of the 3-4 Cub Base 5-2 personnel that drops five defenders underneath while rushing four. The two outside linebackers sink into short flat zones off the numbers, the two inside linebackers spin into shallow hook and curl zones, and the middle linebacker walls off the deep middle, creating a five-under, two-deep look with the safeties holding down over the top. Up front the four defensive linemen rush straight ahead with no blitz shown, so the primary read for the defense is to squeeze any crossing routes and curls working into the underneath zones while trusting the deep safeties to erase anything over the top.
Watch for offenses attacking the seams between the flat defenders and the deep safeties with corner routes or deep outs, since that gap is the natural soft spot in this zone. Key the two inside linebackers dropping into hook and curl zones, they are responsible for taking away shallow crosses and drag routes before the ball gets there. If the offense trips receivers to one side, shift your user control to the flat defender on that side to prevent an easy flood concept from overloading the zone. Look for running back releases into the middle hook zone, since the middle linebacker in this shell has to balance wall duties with picking up check downs. Against play-action, stay disciplined with your linebacker drops since the deep safeties are not rotating down to help against a delayed shot to the flat off the fake.
Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect quick game or curl-flat combinations from the offense.
Use pre-snap motion checks to confirm the offense is not stacking three receivers to one side, since the flat defenders have to cover a lot of grass in this zone shell.
User the middle linebacker to jump any deep in-cuts or dig routes crossing the field, since he is the eraser in this five-under shell.
Pair Trio Sky Zone with Cover 3 Sky in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key the flat defender depth presnap and start guessing wrong on hitches and flat routes.
Bait the quarterback into throwing hot to the flat by showing a similar pre-snap shell to Cover 1 Hole, then rely on your underneath defenders to close passing lanes once the ball is in the air.
