Cover 3 out of the Bear 3-4 Base 5-2 personnel is a three deep, four under zone shell built to defend against both the run and the pass. Pre-snap alignment shows three deep defenders bracketing the field into thirds while four underhood defenders drop into shallow zones, with two flat defenders sinking outside and two curl to flat or hook defenders working the middle of the field. The four red arrows at the line signal the down linemen firing off the snap to control gaps against the run, making this a zone beater against spread formations that try to attack the flats and seams while still giving you numbers versus inside runs. Primary read progression starts with the deep middle third defender reading the quarterback's eyes, then works out to the flat defenders to close on any underneath crossers or flat routes.

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment since a true three deep shell should show off man leverage from the corners with safeties working toward the middle of the field Post-snap, key the quarterback's shoulders and eyes to jump the deep middle third since that defender has the most ground to cover against verticals down the seams Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow flat zones since they can jump quick outs and hitches if the quarterback stares down that side This shell struggles against high low stretches on the flat defenders, so if the offense is running combo routes that put a receiver in the flat and another behind him in the curl, that soft spot needs immediate attention Against play action, trust your front four and linebackers to hold their run fits first since the Bear front is designed to stuff the run, then transition into zone drops once you confirm pass
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when you expect a mix of run or pass since the Bear front gives you extra gap integrity against the run
Check the offensive formation pre-snap and if you see stacked receivers or bunch sets, be ready to bump your flat defenders out to avoid natural pick concepts
Hot route your curl to flat defenders slightly deeper if you are seeing a lot of deep in cuts or dig routes sitting between your underneath and deep zones
