Cover 3 Hard Flat out of the Bear 3-4 Base 5-2 personnel is a zone coverage shell built to defend the flats and deep thirds against quick-hitting pass concepts. The diagram shows three deep defenders running vertical zone drops to divide the field into thirds, two underneath defenders sitting in curl/flat zones with hard outside breaks toward the sideline, and two hook zone defenders crossing underneath to rob shallow in-cut routes. This is a zone beater designed to shut down flat routes and quick outs, with the primary read progression starting at the hard flat defenders reading the number two receiver before working inside to the crossing hook defenders and up to the deep thirds.
Defensive Reads
Watch for receivers releasing quickly to the flats, since the hard flat defenders are sitting on that route and will undercut any out or flat route thrown within the first three steps. Check safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties are shaded deep, this defense is built to bracket vertical shots while conceding underneath completions to hook zones. Post-snap, track the crossing hook defenders since they are designed to rob shallow crossers and drag routes that try to sit in the middle of the field. This coverage is vulnerable to deep out routes and corner routes thrown between the hard flat defender and the deep third defender, so watch for seam or fade concepts stressing that window. Man beater concepts with a receiver working from numbers two to numbers one on a quick angle can exploit the hard flat defender's outside leverage if he bites too early on the flat threat.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and short to medium when you expect quick game concepts like flat routes, slants, or bubble screens aimed at attacking the edges. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is stacking receivers to one side, since the hard flat defenders need clean vision to jump underneath throws without getting picked. Hot route the hook defenders into deeper zones if you diagnose a dig or drag concept coming from a bunch set. Pair this call with Cover 3 or Cover 2 Invert Hard Flat from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on flat defender depth from your base look. Use user control on one of the hard flat defenders to jump the shallow out route and bait the quarterback into a predetermined throw.
