Breakdown

FS Slant 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the 3-4 Under, Base 5-2 personnel. The diagram shows the defensive line slanting hard to one side while the free safety rotates down into a robber-style hole zone, with three deep thirds covered by the corners and a deep third defender, and underneath the strong side flat defender carrying out to the flat while the weak side hook defender bumps to the curl. This is a zone beater against man concepts and a run stopper against gap schemes to the slant side, with the primary read starting deep middle to the free safety's hole zone, then working to the flat defender before checking the backside curl.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth, if both safeties are deep and off the ball this confirms the Cover 3 shell before the free safety rotates down into the hole. Post-snap, key the running back's release, if he releases quickly into the flat on the slant side that is a strong indicator of an RPO or quick screen designed to punish the line slant. Watch for the user controlled free safety sitting in the hole zone, this is your lurk threat against any slant, drag, or dig route trying to work the middle of the field. This coverage gets exposed by four verticals or deep crossers that stretch the underneath zone defenders horizontally before the deep thirds can rotate over. Man concepts with rub routes or pick plays struggle against this since the zone defenders pass off receivers rather than staying attached, making it a strong call against man beater route combos.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when you expect inside zone or gap runs to the slant side, since the line slant clogs the point of attack immediately.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the running back and offensive line splits, if you see heavy splits or pistol formations expect the offense to attack the backside cutback away from your slant.

Use the free safety hole zone as your eyes for any drag or shallow crosser trying to sit in the middle of the field, this defender is your primary trap for quick game throws.

Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar shell presnap but gets a different rotation, keeping the quarterback guessing on where the void is.

Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs against trips or bunch formations, since the line slant removes an extra pass rush lane and leaves the flat defender exposed to quick out routes.
