Breakdown

Weak Blitz 3 is a zone blitz out of the 3-4 Under Base 5-2 personnel that sends five rushers off the weak side while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. The diagram shows two outside linebackers crashing downhill off the edge with the strong side backer looping underneath, while both cornerbacks sink into deep thirds and the safety in the middle zone bumps to a shallow hook or seam drop to help replace the vacated underdog. This is a five-man pressure zone blitz designed to disrupt the quarterback's timing while still keeping three deep defenders over the top, making it a solid zone beater counter against teams that hot route into quick game against man pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back's alignment pre-snap, if he is set to the weak side he is a likely check valve target against this blitz. Key the offensive line's slide protection, if they slide toward the four down rush this weak side backer package can come free untouched. Post-snap, identify if the quarterback is looking to the underdog zone vacated by the blitzing linebacker, that soft spot in the middle is the primary throw window to exploit or to user cover as the defense. This blitz gets beaten by quick game and slot fades since the cornerbacks are locked into deep thirds and cannot help underneath. Avoid calling this against heavy trips or bunch formations where the offense can create natural picks against the blitzing personnel before the rush even develops.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second-and-medium when opponents are still in base personnel and haven't identified the weak side pressure. Check the pre-snap alignment of the running back, if he stays in to chip or block, the fifth rusher home run threat is neutralized so consider a different call. Bring this after showing Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Hard Flat earlier in the drive so quarterbacks see a similar shell and misjudge the extra rusher. Hot route the strong side flat defender into a deeper zone drop if you are worried about quick outs from spread sets. Pair this with Cover 1 Hole WK or Dbl Safety Blitz in the same set to keep quarterbacks guessing between man pressure and zone pressure off identical pre-snap looks.
