Hot Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the 3-4 Over Ed front that drops into a Cover 3 shell behind the rush. Four defenders converge from depth in the box with red rush arrows crashing downhill, while the underneath zone defenders cross paths in a mesh drop to muddy the picture for the quarterback before settling into their landmarks. Three deep defenders run vertical zone drops to cap the field, giving you three deep, three under coverage behind the blitz, making this a zone-blitz look designed to disrupt the pocket while still protecting against explosive plays.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the quarterback's eyes going immediately to the middle of the field, since the crossing underneath zone defenders are built to sit on quick game and rhythm throws. Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment: if both corners are playing off with safeties rotated deep, this Cover 3 shell is already showing itself and you should trust the drop zones. This beats man beater route combos and shallow crossers because the underneath defenders are zoned up and can rally to the ball rather than getting picked on rub routes. It struggles against play-action rollouts and boot concepts that pull the rushers out of their lanes, so key on tight end or fullback leak releases before committing your rushers upfield. Post-snap, track the deep vertical zone defenders' landmarks. If a receiver runs a seam or deep out into the void between the flat defender and deep third defender, that is the primary explosive play risk against this call.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or short yardage passing situations where offenses expect a standard pass rush look, since the disguised zone drops can bait quarterbacks into hot reads that are not actually open.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense has trips or bunch formations that could overload one side of the underneath zone, and consider shifting your Mike linebacker before the snap to match numbers.
User the crossing underneath defender near the middle of the field to jump quick slants and drag routes, since that defender's mesh point path is designed to sit right in those passing lanes.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud from the same set to keep quarterbacks guessing between a true zone blitz and a standard three deep shell without changing your pre-snap alignment much.
Avoid calling this against empty backfield sets or heavy shotgun spread looks, since the five-man rush can get picked apart if the offensive line has a clean numbers advantage in protection.
