Cover 2

3-4·Over Ed·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Cover 2 out of the 3-4 Over Ed set is a two deep safety zone shell with five underneath defenders and a four man rush. The diagram shows both outside cornerbacks jamming the flats while the two safeties bail into deep half zones, the SAM and WILL linebackers cross flow into the underneath hook zones, and the interior of the front four rushes straight upfield with no blitz shown. This is a base zone coverage call designed to take away deep shots and force the offense to check down, with the primary read being the deep half safeties reacting to any vertical route that threatens the seams before working down to the flat defenders and underneath zone droppers.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and even it confirms two deep and the corners will squat in the flats, so bail any receiver running vertical immediately. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers crossing to their hook zones, if they widen too far you open up the middle seam so be ready to user one back into the throwing lane. This shell is vulnerable to the deep out and corner routes attacking the void just outside the numbers between the flat defender and the deep half safety, jump that route with your user if you see it developing. Cover 2 gets exposed against quick slant and flat combinations if your cornerbacks do not press at the line, so use your corner to disrupt the release before the linebackers can help underneath. Beware of play-action rollouts and RPOs that hold your safeties with run action, since a late reacting deep half safety leaves the corner isolated on a vertical route with no help over the top.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and long when you expect the offense to test the deep middle or attempt double moves against your corners.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or a deep out concept since Cover 2 is vulnerable to seam throws between the corner and safety if your underneath defenders do not get a good jam.

User the flat defender or one of the safeties to jump underneath routes and bait the quarterback into a throw you can jump, especially against slot fade or comeback route combos.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on a single deep shell look, then mix in Cover 2 Man later in the series to disguise the same shell with tighter man technique underneath.

Use Cover 2 on third and medium to long when you want to squeeze the quarterback's clock and force him to hold the ball while your four man rush gets home.
