Overview
Predator is a defensive set inside the 3-4 formation, so the "personnel" conversation flips: instead of isolating receivers, you are isolating blockers and forcing the offense to account for a fourth rush threat that is not lined up as a down lineman. The set runs Base 3-4 personnel with three down linemen and four linebackers, but Predator walks an outside linebacker up onto the edge in a sprinter's stance while the other outside linebacker stays off the ball. That asymmetry is the whole point. Offenses reading pre-snap have to decide whether the walked-up OLB is rushing, dropping into a curl/flat zone, or spying the quarterback, and the play art in this set intentionally makes all three look identical until the ball is snapped.
Where other 3-4 sets like Odd or Bear commit to a fixed rush structure, Predator gives you a hybrid edge player who can be shifted, blitzed, or dropped without changing personnel. That matters in Madden because you keep the same coverage integrity behind it. Cover 2 Man puts two deep safeties over the top with man underneath, so the walked-up OLB becomes your fifth threat against a five-man protection. Cov 1 QB Contain is the answer to scrambling quarterbacks: you get single-high man coverage with a designated contain rusher who stays disciplined on the edge instead of running himself out of the play, which is critical against zone-read and QB draw spam.
Olb Strike 2 is the pressure call of the set and the reason people load Predator in the first place. It sends the outside linebackers on a coordinated edge attack behind a two-deep shell, and with pre-snap pinch and spread adjustments plus individual DL/LB shifts, you can create legitimate overload pressure without dropping into a four-man front. The three-play depth is thin, which means Predator is a situational package rather than a base set, but the disguise value between a man-coverage call, a QB contain call, and a double edge blitz out of the same look is exactly what wins pre-snap chess matches in competitive Madden.
Strengths
- Walked-up outside linebacker forces the offense to guess between rush, drop, and QB contain from an identical pre-snap picture, which stalls audible reads and burns clock on the offensive play call.
- Olb Strike 2 creates edge overload pressure behind a two-deep shell, so you get heat without exposing a single-high safety to post and seam shots.
- Cov 1 QB Contain is a legitimate answer to scrambling quarterbacks and zone-read offenses, keeping a disciplined edge player home while man coverage handles the route distribution.
- Cover 2 Man out of Predator lets you user the deep half or a middle underneath defender while your press-man assignments disrupt timing routes and shallow drags.
- Pre-snap DL pinch/spread plus individual linebacker shifts let you move the pressure point without a personnel substitution, so the offense cannot key your blitz side from the huddle.
Weaknesses
- Only three plays in the set, so opponents who see Predator repeatedly can narrow your call sheet to man coverage, QB contain, or a double edge blitz and audible accordingly.
- Base 3-4 personnel means no extra corners on the field, so trips and empty spread sets force linebackers into coverage on slot receivers, which is a losing matchup against speed.
- Olb Strike 2 vacates the edge run fits, so inside zone, counter, and screens to the blitz side hit for chunk yardage if you blitz without a contain player.
- Three-man rush on the coverage calls generates very little natural pressure, so quarterbacks with clean pockets will sit and pick apart the underneath man leverage.
- Cover 2 Man is vulnerable to mesh, drive concepts, and hot-routed shallow crossers that create traffic and rub your man defenders off their assignments.
Usage Tips
Use Predator in second and long or third and medium against 11 and 12 personnel where the offense keeps a tight end and back in for protection, since Olb Strike 2 gets a free edge against five-man sets.
Call Cov 1 QB Contain any time you face a mobile quarterback on third down, and user the deep middle safety so your contain rusher does the dirty work while you help over the top.
Do not run Olb Strike 2 back to back. Alternate it with Cover 2 Man out of the same look so the offense cannot commit a slide protection to the walked-up outside linebacker.
Pinch the defensive line before Olb Strike 2 to tighten interior gaps and let the outside linebackers win the edge cleanly, then spread the line on your coverage calls to widen run fits.
Audible out of Predator into a nickel or dime set the moment the offense goes trips or empty, because your Base 3-4 personnel will get exploited on slot matchups if you stay in it.
Man-align and press on Cover 2 Man against timing-based route combos, and user a hook defender to sit on drags and shallow crossers that beat pure man leverage.
