The remaining underneath defenders drop into short zone coverage to take away quick throws, while the four defenders shown with X marks stay deep to cover the boundary and middle of the field. This is a five-man zone blitz designed to collapse the pocket fast, and the primary read for the defense is getting immediate pressure up the middle before the quarterback can climb the pocket or find a hot route.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the offensive line splits and running back alignment to confirm if this is run or pass, since Mike Will Blitz sends five rushers and only leaves shallow zone coverage to compensate. This blitz shuts down quick game and shallow crossers because the underneath zone defenders are dropping directly into those windows, so if the offense audibles to slants or drags, trust your zone drops rather than chasing. Watch for the offense sliding protection toward the Will or Mike side pre-snap: if the running back checks into a chip or full slide protection, your interior rushers may get picked up and you need to trust the coverage to hold up longer. Deep shots are the biggest risk with this call since only zone defenders are left over the top, so if you see two receivers stacked or a vertical stem from the slot, be ready to bail your zone defender into a deep third rather than sitting short. Post-snap, identify if the quarterback is getting rid of the ball in under two seconds: if he is, your blitz timing is beating the protection, but if he holds the ball, check if a hot route or sight adjustment is exploiting your vacated underneath zone.
