NFL Live Raiders Defense is functionally the same book as its sibling cut, Raiders Defense. The two share all 329 plays and differ by zero sets, so there is no strategic reason to agonize over which one you load. Pick either, and treat the NFL Live label as a shelf tag rather than a different scheme. Everything below applies equally to both cuts.
At 329 plays across 8 formations and 22 sets, this is a mid-sized defensive team book that is larger than 32% of the 64 defensive team playbooks in the game, and its weight is unmistakably sub package. Nickel accounts for 145 plays (44%) across 8 sets, and Dime adds another 75 plays (23%) across 3 sets, meaning two thirds of the entire book lives in five and six defensive back looks. Big Nickel 4-2-5 and Nickel 4-2-5 carry the down to down load, while Big Dime 4-1-6, Big Dime 2-3-6, Dime 4-1-6 and Big Quarter 3-1-7 take over on obvious passing downs. The coverage menu backs that up: Cover 1, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 3, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4, Quarters, Cover 2, Cover 6, plus Blitz and LB Blitz tags for pressure out of those same shells.
Base personnel exists here, but as a change up rather than a foundation. 3-4 gives you 33 plays across 2 sets, 4-3 gives 30 across 3 sets, 4-4 is a single set with 9 plays, and 2-4-5 adds an 18 play hybrid front from one set. Goal Line Defense has 13 plays across 3 sets and Prevent is a 6 play end of half package. The game plan this supports is a spread era approach: line up in Nickel on almost every snap, disguise single high looks like Cover 1 Hole and 1 Double Slot against tight formations, spin into Cover 3 Match or Quarters against spread sets, and lean on Dime pressure and Cov 1 QB Contain Spy style calls to handle scrambling quarterbacks on third down.
Scheme Fit
This book wants a defensive back heavy roster: three or more corners you trust in man, a nickel defender with strong press and zone coverage ratings, and at least one safety with high play recognition and speed to user in the deep middle behind Cover 1 Hole. Because 67% of the plays are Nickel or Dime, you need linebackers who can cover, not just tackle, plus edge rushers who can win one on one since many Dime calls rush four or fewer. Pick NFL Live Raiders Defense if you are a coverage-first user who likes disguising single high and matched zone looks from sub personnel, and if you are comfortable manually shifting the line on run downs rather than relying on base fronts.

Strengths
- Eight separate Nickel sets off 145 plays means you can shift fronts, motion into new alignments and re-run the same Cover 1 Hole or Cover 3 Match shell from different looks without ever leaving the formation, so your opponent gets no pre-snap tell from personnel.
- Nickel at 44% plus Dime at 23% lets you build a single audible package that never subs out, keeping your fifth and sixth defensive backs on the field and eliminating the sub-in animation window that base heavy books give up when the offense goes fast.
- Three Dime sets including Big Dime 4-1-6, Big Dime 2-3-6 and the Big Quarter 3-1-7 personnel give you distinct pressure and coverage shapes on third and long, so you can send an LB Blitz from a six DB look one snap and drop into Quarters from the same personnel the next.
- Coverage depth is genuinely wide for a book this size: Cover 1, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4, Quarters and Cover 6 all appear, which means you can answer flood and high low route combos with a matched zone instead of being forced into man every time you want to play tight.
- The 2-4-5 hybrid set and 3-4 pairing give you two-down-lineman and three-down-lineman pressure looks that disguise which of your linebackers is actually rushing, a nano-style overload option that pure 4-3 weighted books cannot show.
Weaknesses
- Only 30 plays of 4-3 across 3 sets and a single 4-4 set with 9 plays means heavy run formations, especially double tight and two back sets, will out-personnel you if you stay in your Nickel comfort zone, and you will be manually shifting the line to compensate.
- Two thirds of the book being Nickel and Dime makes your tendencies readable. An experienced opponent will assume five or six defensive backs, motion to identify man versus zone, and attack the box with inside runs and RPO reads.
- 3-4 gets 33 plays across just 2 sets, so your odd front pressure library is shallow. If an opponent learns to slide protection against those two sets, you lose your primary non-four-man rush answer.
- Goal Line Defense is only 13 plays across 3 sets, which is thin for short yardage and fade-in-the-corner situations where you need multiple distinct looks to avoid being predictable inside the five.
- Prevent is a lone 6 play set, so end of half and end of game clock defense has almost no variety, and you will often be better off manually dropping a Dime coverage rather than trusting the package.
Usage Tips
Set your primary audible package inside Nickel, mixing Big Nickel 4-2-5 for first and second down and Nickel 4-2-5 for balanced passing downs, since 145 plays across 8 sets gives you everything you need without a personnel change.
On third and 7 or longer, go to Dime, specifically Big Dime 4-1-6 or Dime 4-1-6, and pair a Blitz or LB Blitz call with a user-controlled safety over the top so you can pressure without abandoning the deep middle.
Save Big Quarter 3-1-7 out of the Dime group for third and 15 plus or four minute situations against empty sets, where the extra defensive back matters more than the fourth rusher.
Against mobile quarterbacks, call Cov 1 QB Contain Spy from your Nickel package rather than a base front blitz, then hot route the spy defender's assignment only if the offense empties the backfield.
Keep 3-4 and 4-3 in your secondary audible slot for first and second down run downs and short yardage, and use 2-4-5 as your disguise front when you want to show pressure from two linemen and drop a linebacker into the hole.
