1 Double TE

Nickel·Over·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

1 Double TE from the Nickel Over set shows all four eligible receivers running vertical breaking routes that angle downward and to the outside off the snap, with two tight ends inside and receivers/backs outside based on the square icons at the bottom of the diagram. This is tagged as a Cover 1 man beater, designed to attack single high man coverage with in-cuts or breaking routes that create separation against tight man technique. The primary read progression works outside in, working the numbers matchups on the breaking routes before checking down to the shorter developing route if the initial reads are covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this confirms Cover 1 and tells you the play is live against the man coverage shell it is designed to beat. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since this can jump the breaking routes if the quarterback is late on the throw. Check linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers in man coverage on the tight ends can be beaten with quick separation on the break. If the defense shows two deep safeties post-snap instead of one, this indicates a coverage rotation into a zone shell that will take away the man beater advantage. Look for disguised blitz packages off the edge, since Cover 1 often pairs with pressure and a free rusher can force a bad decision before the breaking routes come open.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see one deep safety and tight press corners this play is designed to exploit that Cover 1 shell. Use motion or a hot route audible on the backside receiver if you see the defense shift to a 2 high shell after your presnap motion. This play pairs well with Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 1 Hole in your play-calling sequence since all three attack the same coverage look but stress different levels of the defense. Run this on early downs or manageable third downs where you have time to let the breaking routes develop against man coverage. Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they widen out to the flats you have space to work the intermediate breaking routes underneath.
