Breakdown

FS Will Blitz 0 is a Cover 0 zero blitz out of the Nickel Over set that sends the free safety off the weak side edge along with the Will linebacker, stacking five rushers at the snap while leaving zero deep safety help behind the man coverage. The diagram shows five underneath defenders converging downhill with arrows crashing toward the line of scrimmage, confirming an all out man pressure look with no shell over the top. Every remaining defender is locked in man coverage on the perimeter, so the primary read is getting the free rusher home before the quarterback can hit his first read against man beaters.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the running back alignment and depth because a check release back can pick up your blitzing linebacker and neutralize the interior pressure. Look for the offense sliding protection toward the blitz side, which tells you the free rusher will likely be picked up and you should have a secondary contain plan ready. Post-snap, your man defenders need to locate their receivers immediately since there is no deep safety to erase a blown coverage assignment. This play shuts down hot route sight adjustments and quick slants because the underneath defenders are in man with no zone drop to exploit. It gets beaten by max protect play-action rollouts and deep double moves since every defender is committed to either the rush or tight man coverage with zero help over the top.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and long or in two minute situations when you need a negative play or a forced incompletion, since Cover 0 has no deep safety to bail you out on busted assignments.

Check the offensive formation pre-snap for trips or bunch sets that can create a natural pick against your man defenders, and be ready to audible into Cover 1 Robber Press if you see stack releases designed to rub off your corners.

User the free safety on the blitz path and time your break at the snap to beat the tackle or running back to the hole before the quarterback can get through his progression.

Pair this with Cover 1 LB Blitz and Edge Blitz 0 in the same set to disguise your pressure package, since all three show similar pre-snap looks but attack from different gaps.

Avoid calling this against empty backfield sets or against offenses that love quick game concepts, since your rushers may not have time to close before the ball is out.
