Nickel Over is a defensive set, not an offensive one, and the play list reflects that: Cover 1 Robber Press, Cover 3 Sky, Cover 4 Quarters, Tampa 2, Nickel Blitz 3, Overload Blitz, and a deep bank of match and simulated pressure calls. The Over front slides the strength of the four man line toward the tight end or passing strength, putting the RDT over the guard and the RLE/RRE in a wide nine style alignment with the NT shaded to the weak side. With 4-2-5 personnel (two linebackers plus the SUBLB and SLCB tags on the field), you get a base front that holds up against inside zone and single back power while keeping five defensive backs in coverage.
What separates Over from Under or standard Double A Gap looks inside Nickel is the line slide and the resulting blitz geometry. Because the tackles are shifted toward strength, the weak side A and B gaps open up for the SUBLB and slot corner, which is exactly what Nickel Blitz 3, Edge Blitz 0, FS Will Blitz 0, and Dbl Safety Blitz attack. The SLCB tag means your nickel is a true coverage defender who can be left on an inside receiver in man or used as the overhang in Cover 4 Palms and Cover 6 Willie, so you are not forced into a base linebacker covering a slot receiver.
The coverage menu is where this set earns its money in competitive play. You have bracket concepts (Double Bracket, Bracket Switch Willie, Bracket 9 Switch, 1 Double Wr1, 1 Double Wr2, 1 Double Slot, 1 Double TE) to erase a single elite receiver, full match coverage (Cover 3 Match, Cover 2 Match, Cov 3 Buzz Match WK, Cover 4 Quarters CK Bingo/Stress/Zone It) to handle route distribution automatically, and simulated pressures (Field Sim 3, Sim Pressure 3, Nickel Sim 2, Show SS Sim 2, Over Storm Brave) that send four or five while staying sound behind it. That combination lets you show one picture pre-snap and play something completely different post-snap without ever leaving the formation.
Live in the disguise game: line up in a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, then use pre-snap adjustments to shift safeties and land in Cover 1 Robber Press or Cover 3 Buzz Match after the snap so the quarterback never gets a clean read.
Use bracket calls situationally, not every play. Save Double Bracket and 1 Double Wr1 for third down and red zone when the offense has a clear go-to target, then roll back to Cover 3 Match on early downs.
On third and long, pair a simulated pressure (Sim Pressure 3, Field Sim 3) with a user-controlled deep safety or the SUBLB in the middle to take away the checkdown while the rush gets home four on five.
User the SLCB or the hook defender rather than a deep safety when calling Cover 2 Invert, Tampa 2, or Cover 2 Drop, since the vulnerable window in those shells is the intermediate middle, not the deep third.
Against obvious run down and distance, check to Over Storm Brave or Nickel 2 Trap to spill the ball outside where your extra defensive back outnumbers the offense, and shift the line toward the tight end to reinforce the strong side gaps.
Rotate your zero blitz calls (Edge Blitz 0, FS Will Blitz 0, Dbl Safety Blitz) sparingly and only when you have press coverage winning, because one hot route beats them clean.
