2-4 Single Mug is a defensive set inside the Nickel 4-2-5 personnel group, and it is one of the most aggressive pre-snap pictures available in the Nickel formation. Instead of stacking both inside linebackers at depth like standard Nickel looks, this set mugs a single linebacker directly over the A gap while the second linebacker walks up or plays off, creating a two-down-lineman, four-off-the-ball look with five defensive backs. The front is built around RDT, RLE, RRE, and NT tags with SUBLB filling the second linebacker role and SLCB handling the slot, so you get pass rush flexibility without sacrificing a fifth cover defender.
What separates this set from other Nickel sets is the ambiguity of the mugged look. Offenses cannot tell from the play art whether the A gap linebacker is rushing, spying, or dropping to the hole, which forces the quarterback to declare protection before the snap and often triggers a slide that leaves the opposite edge one on one. Plays like Blitz Tex 3 Sim 3, DB Blitz Tex 3, Dt Mike Loop 3, and Nickel Blitz 3 attack that indecision with simulated pressure and loops behind the mug, while Cover 1 Hole, Cov 3 Buzz Match, Tampa 2, Cover 2 Invert, Cover 4 Quarters, Nickel 2 Trap, and Cover 9 let you run the exact same shell with zero extra rushers.
The personnel edge comes from the slot corner. With SLCB matched on the number two receiver instead of a linebacker, you can play true man coverage out of Cover 1 Hole against trips and bunch without burning a user on the slot. Against heavier offensive personnel, the two-man front with four off the ball gives you clean scrape and fill angles on inside runs while still keeping your nickel over the passing strength, which is exactly the matchup you want when an opponent tries to run at the mug.
Call the mug look on second and long or third down when the offense is in eleven personnel, then alternate between Cov 3 Buzz Match and Blitz Tex 3 Sim 3 from the identical pre-snap picture
Use Dt Mike Loop 3 as your primary heat call against opponents who slide protection toward the mugged linebacker, since the loop attacks the side they just vacated
User the hole player or the free safety on Cover 1 Hole and let SLCB handle the slot, which keeps your eyes on crossers and drag concepts
Pinch the line and shade coverage inside before the snap when you suspect inside zone, since the two-man front needs help constraining the A and B gaps
Mix Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Invert on early downs to bait the seam throw, then flip to Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 9 on third and long when the offense goes vertical
Do not spam Nickel Blitz 3 against quick passing games, save it for empty and obvious dropback situations where the extra rusher actually arrives on time
