3-3 Load Mug is a defensive set inside the Nickel formation, and it flips the standard Nickel 4-2-5 look by pulling a defensive lineman off the ball and replacing him with a third linebacker sugared in the A gaps. The "Mug" tag means both inside linebackers walk up over the guard-center gaps pre-snap, which forces the offense to declare protection before the ball is snapped. With only three down linemen and three second-level defenders threatening interior pressure, the offense cannot tell who is coming and who is bailing to a hook zone. That ambiguity is the entire value of the set.
Personnel is standard Nickel 4-2-5 on paper (RDT and SUBLB tags mean you get a rotational defensive tackle and a substituted linebacker body), but the alignment plays like a 3-3-5. You keep five defensive backs on the field, so you are still built to defend 11 and 10 personnel spread sets without giving up speed at the second level. Against Trips and Bunch, you retain the nickel corner to match the slot, and you can user the free safety or a mugged linebacker depending on whether you expect a quick game concept or a vertical shot.
Where this set separates from the rest of the Nickel playbook is blitz variety. The play list runs from Cover 1 LB Blitz and LB Blitz 0 all the way to Cover 3 Match, Tampa 2, and Cover 6 Willie, so you can show the exact same mugged front and play zero, one, two, three, or quarters behind it. That range lets you isolate the offense's worst pass protector, usually a running back or a backup guard, and attack the same A gap with different coverage rotations until the opponent commits to max protect. Once he does, you drop eight and take away his two remaining routes.
Use the mug as a bluff on early downs: show both linebackers in the A gaps, then back out into Cover 3 Match or Cover 6 to steal a first down completion into a squatting zone.
On third and long, pair Nickel Blitz 2 or Hot Blitz 3 with a pinched line and user the middle hook so you can rob the sit route while the pressure gets home.
Against empty, check to Cover 1 LB Blitz and manually shade the mugged linebacker over the back's most likely release lane, then user the free safety over the top of the isolated slot.
Motion recognition matters here: if the offense motions to condense, kick your nickel corner inside and consider Cover 2 Man so you are not chasing crossers with a linebacker.
Alternate Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud out of the identical mug look on repeat calls so the opponent cannot key which flat defender is dropping and which is pressing.
