Overview

Load is a defensive set inside Nickel, and the play list makes that obvious: every call is a coverage shell or a games/overload pressure package rather than an offensive route concept. The RDT and SUBLB tags tell you what you are working with in Nickel 4-2-5 personnel, a reduced down tackle alignment with substituted linebackers, which means you are getting speed and coverage ability at the second level instead of thumper run stoppers. The four man front stays intact, two linebackers patrol the box, and five defensive backs handle everything from 3x1 trips looks to empty. That personnel split is the entire point of Load: you keep base gap integrity against 11 personnel runs while still having the bodies to match spread route distributions.

Strengths

  • Massive coverage variety from one shell: Cover 3 Buzz Mable, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 4 Palms, Cover 6, Cover 6 Willie, Tampa 2, and Cover 3 Match all live in the same set, so you can disguise pre-snap without ever changing personnel
  • Cover 1 Robber, Cover 1 Robber Pirate, and Cover 1 Robber Tom give you three separate man variations with a free rat in the hole, which kills drag and shallow cross concepts that beat standard Cover 1
  • Double Bracket, 1 Double Wr1, and 1 Double Wr2 let you erase a specific alpha receiver without manually building the bracket yourself, huge against slot demons and users who force feed one target
  • 0 LB Cross Games, 1 LB Cross Games, LB 3 Seam Games, and Overload 3 Seam bring twist and overload pressure out of a four down look, so you get heat with zone behind it instead of exposing man coverage
  • SUBLB personnel means your second level defenders can actually run with tight ends and slot receivers on seams and option routes rather than getting torched in space

Weaknesses

  • RDT and SUBLB personnel gives up size in the box, so heavy inside zone, power, and lead draw runs will grind out four to six yards if you sit in Quarters or Cover 6
  • Only two linebackers means play action rollouts and QB scramble lanes open up fast when you send the games packages, especially if your user is playing a deep safety
  • Cover 4 Quarters and Cover 4 Palms surrender the flat and the underneath middle, so smart opponents will spam quick outs, slants, and check downs to move the chains without ever testing your deep help
  • Double Bracket and the 1 Double Wr calls strip a defender from the rest of the field, which leaves you thin on the opposite side against isolated corner routes and back shoulder throws
  • The zone match calls (Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 Palms, Cover 6 Willie) can bust against tight bunch and flood distributions if you do not user the hole player yourself

Usage Tips

Live in Cover 3 Match and Cover 3 Buzz Mable on early downs against 11 personnel spread looks, then flip to Cover 1 Robber Tom or Tampa 2 on third down once you have their tendency read

Use Double Bracket or 1 Double Wr1 when an opponent has fed the same receiver three straight plays, and user the opposite side corner so you are not giving away the free matchup

Save 0 LB Cross Games and Overload 3 Seam for second and long or third and long where the offense has to hold protection, since the twist takes an extra beat to develop

Against strong run offenses in this personnel, shift your defensive line and pinch the linebackers pre snap before the snap rather than relying on RDT alignment alone to hold the gaps

Cover 6 and Cover 6 Willie are your best answers to 3x1 trips because you get Quarters to the strength and Cover 2 to the isolated side, taking away both the flood and the backside fade
